Sounds like you’re trying to prepare everyone for when the Panthers draft Mac Jones. I am definitely not saying Lance is like Newton. Far from it. He’s no where near as big or as powerful, or even as good of a QB as Newton was when he came out of college. What Lance does have is a good set of physical tools that could translate into being a very good QB, maybe the best in the 2021 NFL draft class. And yes I’m including Lawrence in that. No guarantees Trevor turns into a superstar either, especially on the Jaguars. Lance just reminded me of the physical tools Mahomes had coming out of college. Great arm, great mobility, and the ability to find guys down field after scrambling around to avoid pressure. My second choice behind Lawrence would be Fields, but I just don’t see that happening. Fields will almost certainly go #2 or #3 overall. If Lance is there at 8, I think the Panthers have to draft him. He could sit for half or a full season on the Panthers behind Bridgewater. And now with Sean Ryan in the fold, who had a hand in developing Deshaun Watson, I think it’s definitely a good spot for him. Could be a lot worse. Would be very hard for me to get excited about Mac Jones at 8. If they traded back, I’d be cool with Jones in the 20s with some added picks to beef up the O-Line. Because with a guy like Jones, you’re gonna need a better O-Line than what the Panthers had last season.

I just watched highlights of Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Trey Lance, and Mac Jones. Here are my thoughts: Zach Wilson seems frantic in the pocket. His running ability and athleticism is clear. He made some nice throws, but also didn’t always set his feet and throws in funky positions and off his back foot a lot. I think he will struggle to adjust to the NFL unless he’s given time on the bench. He didn’t have a lot of starts in college and he reminds me a lot of Mitch Trubisky. I wouldn’t be thrilled if the Panthers drafted him. Justin Fields is very talented. He made a lot of nice throws and has probably the best pure running ability of any QB in this draft class. He read the field well most of the time and made the right throw. He has nice touch on the ball and throws an accurate pass more often than not. The main thing that scares me with him is how awful Ohio State QBs tend to be at the NFL level. Mac Jones is probably the most old school QB in the draft. Dude just drops back and slings it. He isn’t going to buy you a lot of time in the pocket with his athleticism so he would benefit from a team with a good offensive line that could give him time to scan the field (bad fit for the Panthers there). He has underrated arm strength and decent pocket awareness when he had pressure. Main knock on him to me which I’ve heard is, the talent around him was baller. It’s true. His guys constantly beat their man and got wide open. All Mac had to do was hit them, and he did. Consistently. I think he’s a late 1st round pick. Trey Lance was my favorite QB I watched. Granted, he had the smallest sample size to watch and played against the lowest completion level. But he put off some Patrick Mahomes vibes to me. Guy is super athletic, can buy you a ton of time in the pocket, and has a cannon for an arm. Made some “wow” throws after scrambling around to buy time, and could be the best QB in the draft if he goes to the right team. Will definitely need time on the bench to develop. He was way too quick to take off and run sometimes and struggled to get off his first read. But the tools are there based on what I saw. Overall I think Trey Lance is the only other possible superstar QB in this draft outside of obviously Trevor Lawrence. If we draft him at 8, I think he would be coming to a team that could give him a good chance to succeed with some time on the bench his rookie year and some good weapons. Fields is a boom or bust prospect, mainly because of the Ohio State thing, but I think he will end up being a good QB in the NFL. I wouldn’t be angry if we got Mac Jones, but I would hope we traded down if we do. Zach Wilson just feels like a bust waiting to happen but, who knows, I’m not an expert. tl:dr: I am officially on team Trey Lance.

Matt Ryan and Jones coming back so that take a qb off the list

Panthers are coming off as QB hungry as any team in the NFL right now. But watch Bridgewater be the starter next season with some random 4th round QB backing him up -
Trade up with Dolphins seems the most likely at this point

Yay let’s trade up to the spot we would have been if we’d just lost to washington what a depressing thing to think about I’m fully against trading up. Stay out and hope a guy you like falls, or trade back and continue building up the team. Honestly wouldn’t mind if they went heavy on OL and defense and stacked the roster -
How close did the Panthers come to getting Stafford? Dang close.

Was Teddy a part of the deal for Stafford? Has this question already been answered? -
I do not agree that giving up the #8 overall pick for Stafford would have been a good move. He’s 33 years old and has never shown the ability in his career to elevate a team. He plays well when he has talent around him. In that way I didn’t see him as much of an upgrade over Teddy aside from his arm strength. To your point in the second paragraph you wrote, the Panthers are very much a team in need of another great draft to compete for a playoff spot. Honestly I feel like they could draft all defense again, sign a free agent offensive line, and be an 8-8 borderline playoff team with Bridgewater as QB in 2021. Not what we’d all want next season but it would be an improvement.
-
I’m glad it didn’t happen. That kind of trade for a 33 year old QB would have crippled this team for a decade. Stafford wasn’t going to elevate a poor roster. Watson might. But his price is even higher. Panthers are probably best off just upgrading the rest the roster, letting the rest of NFL eat each other for QBs, and adding talent at QB once the dust settles next offseason. Would have been a very different offseason if they’d just lost to Washington but we all knew that win sucked.
-
Unless something drastic happens, you’re right. Bridgewater is going to be the starter next season. Will there be a rookie as his backup? Maybe, but I’m guessing there won’t be. Panthers really screwed themselves beating Washington as we all know. If all the top QBs are gone at 8, Panthers should trade back and accumulate picks. Stack the roster with talent and find a QB next year. With a better team and a healthy CMC, Bridgewater might be just enough to get the team to the playoffs.
-
Panthers should trade down if the top 4 QBs are gone by their pick. Maybe they can snag an extra 1st next year. If they can’t upgrade the QB spot, flood the roster with talent like Miami did.

Panthers confirmed to be in Stafford discussion
hepcat replied to Mr. Scot's topic in Carolina Panthers
Unless it’s for a reasonable price I’m not really interested in Stafford. Bridgewater and a 2nd, maybe. But damn, if they give up a 1st for Stafford I’ll be really pissed. -
Stafford trade agreement might be in place before the Super Bowl

Mike Remmers will start at left tackle in the Superbowl.

Packers were starting backup tackles against Shaq Barrett and JPP and it didn’t end well. Mahomes is a magician and gets rid of the ball extremely fast. Excited to see how that plays out. -
We all know Bridgewater isn’t the answer. But frankly the Panthers aren’t in a great position to move on from him. He has a $23m cap hit and no team will be jumping for joy to add him to their roster. Picking 8 in the first round, there are a lot of QB hungry teams picking ahead of the Panthers. So, I would not be surprised if the Panthers continue building the roster through the draft and be forced to roll with Bridgewater next season. Could we see someone like Darnold or Trubisky brought in to compete with Teddy? Definitely possible. But if they can draft as well as they did last year, the team will be better regardless.

I thought he might be a surprise QB to change teams this offseason. The 49ers might definitely be in the mix for him.
