Gettleman on Boston "He sets a tone, he's a very physical player"

Can a Carolina fan please tell me something about Boston. I like him but have not seen much of him at all other than cut ups. I think he's worthy of a pick but 4th round IMO was way too high.

Check out Cash Newton's post a few above yours.

I've seen a lot of Tre.  I'll be honest.  The pick did not excite me initially.  As a fan of Carolina football he was often a very frustrating player to watch.  He frequently takes poor angles on tackles and was slow to receivers in zone coverage.  He also came with ample preseason fan fare which led to bigger expectations.  You'd hear "I dont understand the hype over this guy" more than I'd like to remember.  He was also a part of one of the worst defenses at Carolina in my life time, but its unfair to put that all on him.

With all that said he was much better this past season.  He is a talented player for sure.  Far from perfect, but he made quite a few plays last year that had me thinking, thats an NFL play.  Everything that has been said about his vocal leadership is true.  He help lead the Heels from one of the worst defenses in the conference to a respectable one.  He is a good kid that isn't going to cause problems, but he is the definition of confident.  He has the physical tools.  I don't see him as the big hitter that some are saying, but he is a very physical player that loves football.  He'll be a team first guy, and i expect him to be a contributor on special teams.  This pick reminds me a bit of the AJ Klein pick.  He'll take the coaching, contribute anyway he can, and if his # is called I believe you can count on him to play with in the scheme.

I didn't jump out of my seat at the pick, but looking at the big picture this is a potential down the road starter who will give you immediate contributions on special teams and team character.  He'll be great in practice, and I'm hoping for the best.

Fourth rounders typically have some issues or they would have been drafted higher.  Some continue to develop and become starters and surely contributors.  For others the issues limit their ability to play long term.So of course Tre has issues.  The important thing is does he work hard to overcome his limitations or allow them to define him.

And thats what bothers me. I mean surely they had to be a halfway decent tackle that could have atleast come and start this year and be better than what we have. Cason, Harper, Decoud, Godfrey coming back. Is Boston really neccesary?

Not sure I want to count on a 4th round tackle starting for me. Would much rather have a skill player that needs some coaching.

Uh... what? They just had 5 players drafted this year. They had 5 players drafted last year. They had 9 players drafted in 2011. They've had 5 1st round picks in the last 4 years and have had guys drafted in the 1st round in 5 of the last 6 years. Yet, you argue that they cause "player regression"?

Sorry, there's simply nothing to support your claim. We're not talking about an SEC powerhouse here that's bringing in the cream of the crop year in and year out. The NFL talent UNC has churned out considering their recruiting class rankings is absolutely phenomenal. Not many of those 1st round picks were considered future 1st rounders when they first arrived in Chapel Hill.

My point was, they go to UNC highly recruited, appear lack luster during their time, get drafted to a pro team and then beast!

UNC is to college ball, what the Raiders are to pro ball

Thats about as uninformed a comment as you can make.  They did win their division season before last.

this is one of the dumbest opinions I've read on here in a while. Painfully obvious you don't know what you're talking about.

I would've been fine with him in the 6th.. He has a lot of potential but it's questionable if he'll ever reach it IMO

UNC has been supplying talent to the NFL team in the last decade like they're a perennial title contender when they're far from it.  As a UNC fan, that's frustrating because it hasn't translated to the success on the college gridiron that you'd expect.  Guys don't get drafted by the NFL, especially in the 1st round by appearing lackluster.

If you wanna hate UNC, hate away, but at least be rational about it.

    • I had a huge response typed up for this that I lost entirely so I'm starting from scratch which is annoying but sh*t happens. I think Purdy is a high end game manager. I've made my thoughts known. I think he is talented and is at his best in the areas of timing rhythm and accuracy. When playing within the structure and scheme of that Shanahan offense and the talent around him he can be really good. Where his limitations become pronounced and more evident is when he has to go toe to toe with dynamic elite QB's. Which obviously isn't a problem just limited to him. But he's been given almost 200 million dollars guaranteed so that's an issue. I think the 49ers will struggle to get back to the mountain top with his new contract looming large and certainly they will face a very steep climb to somehow winning another championship. As far as Bryce within the pocket there have been numerous discussions here and even video circulated of him bouncing around the pocket like a pogo surveying the field or having both feet off the ground to deliver a pass. It exists even if you or someone else doesn't want it to. And I get why. But it's up to Bryce and Canales to figure out how to not only get his footwork where it needs to be and keep it there but to build a scheme around Bryce and what he does best and fit his limitations into a formidable offense. Look brother we can get into the weeds about this but I will respectfully say I do not believe you are being consistent here. You have gone out of your way as one of the key voices complaining about how striking the lack of quality talent and coaching was around Bryce Young in 2023. You've also been a key voice who has gone out of your way to sprinkle sunshine and rainbows on just about any discussion around every Panthers player and anything Panthers in general. Which is fine and can be a good thing. It's not for everyone but still more power to you. But it's jarring to see that and then you here now in what I can only describe as downplaying the talent around Bryce when it comes time to shield him from what you perceive to be unfair criticism which others such as myself would argue is not only fair for a first round pick but wholly realistic given the resources we surrendered to be able to draft him. The current FO have made an undisputed effort to build around Bryce given the aforementioned limitations created by the trade. There is never going to be a time where Bryce or any other Panthers QB is going to have elite or all pro level talent across the entire offense. But the FO has put talent around him. If you want to say that this is young and undeveloped talent in some areas that's fine but they are building around him. I'm going to be honest with you I cannot recall ever hearing this "big time throw" metric being mentioned in past conversations about Panthers QB's. I mean if Bryce or any other QB is making franchise QB or fringe elite QB  level throws we can recognize that with our own eyes. We have seen this from Bryce  which was a relief and very welcomed sight but now it's up to him to prove he can sustain that because in fairness we've seen some pretty impressive passes from past QB's who ultimately didn't pan out who were arguably more phsyically talented than Bryce. 3rd down conversion and turnover worthy plays are certainly something to hone in on. Bryce did improve in the redzone in that final stretch of games. However one key area to keep an eye on will be passing plays to the middle of the field. That's been an issue for us and Bryce both with turnovers and with bad moments from our receivers with bad drops.  We'll have to see what Dave Canales has planned for all of this within his scheme. I don't expect miracles but I do expect a competent formidable offense that is enjoyable to watch in 2025. That's the minimum expectation and I do not believe it is at all unreasonable.
    • You gotta have that attitude. Feels like a major turnaround to me!
