Manziel Not Impressing

You know, way back in the forgotten ages of the distant past, the NFL champ would play the College All Stars in preseason.

 

I remember watching my beloved Browns getting their clocks cleaned by the College All Star squad.

 

Can't remember the year, but it must have been '55 or '56.

 

Apparently, they still haven't gotten over it.

The huddle has been hypocritically obsessed with drama stirred up by the media the moment Cam was drafted and has included every QB drafted after him.

 

Every. Single. One.

I've never seen a team draft a guy that they appeared to have a vendetta against from the start. It's almost like they said "yeah let's draft this guy and show him that he's not as good as he thinks he is."

the story behind why the Browns decided to trade up to draft Manziel in the first place is pretty bizarre:

"We're sitting there and they keep showing Johnny on T.V. and Johnny and I are texting and he shoots me a text and he says, 'I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me"

"When I got that text, I forwarded it to the owner and to the head coach (Mike Pettine)''

"I'm like 'this guy wants to be here. He wants to be part of it.' As soon as that happened, Mr. Haslam (the owner) said, 'pull the trigger. We're trading up to go get this guy.'''

"We knew we had to get in front of the Chiefs (at No. 23) because we knew they would draft him.''

A source told the Cleveland newspaper that Loggains never meant to make it sound like (owner Jimmy) Haslam made the pick instead of general manager Ray Farmer. "Farmer definitely made the call,'' the source said.

And (owner Jimmy) Haslam said on Monday:

"Ray's the one that picked Johnny Manziel," Haslam told the Pro Football Hall of Fame luncheon club on Monday.

"That was solely Ray's call, not my call." He added that although "Ray gets a lot of input, Ray's the one that decided to make the trade, Ray's the one that picked Johnny Manziel, Ray's the one that made those calls ... I want to make that very clear.''

In other words, he's basically telling the world that Ray Farmer's future is directly tied to Manziel's.  I thought they were crazy to hire Chud as their HC, but I thought they were even crazier to fire him after only one season.  If Manziel doesn't win ROY, Farmer's head may roll after only one season too.  Haslem has been full of kneejerk reactions since acquiring the Browns.  I wouldn't put much of anything past him.  The guy should be in prison right now.

He was pretty damn bad. I mean, most of the fan base was wanting him to start to get him some experience and to not have to see Clausen again, but no one expected him to bust out of the gates like he did. Cam Newton having back to back 400+ yard passing games to begin his career after that preseason has to be one of the most shockingly positive things I can ever recall in all my years of following the Panthers.

Im not saying he was the greatest im saying that while mostly he wasnt spectacular he did show flashes of being a very good quarter back and I agree it really was mind blowing how quickly he put it all together

Right now they just look like idiots pointing fingers on "who is at fault" for this.  The team chose Johnny. Time to stop outcasting him as a "project guy."  I don't think Hoyer is bad at all when healthy.  But geez, at least act like the guy that single handedly sold the team 2,000 more season ticket packages in one day has a legit shot at winning the starting job.  This tough guy approach, in Cleveland in all places, is downright ludicrous.

This.  Panthers fans have defended Cam vehemently from negative press and opinions but seem to be feasting on the same now that it's directed at Manziel.

 

That's an apples to oranges comparison.  Cam was anything but a media darling, reviled by many fans and talking heads alike.  Sure, Cam had an issue with a laptop and was at least indirectly involved in a play for pay scandal, but most people just didn't like him because they were taking their cue from many in the media that were intent on villainizing Cam---truth be damned!  Moreover, the fact is is that even though Cam has been a model citizen off the field and a hard working professional when it comes to his craft, people still continue to dislike him for their own reasons.

 

Johnny Manziel was mostly beloved by the media, notwithstanding some decidedly garish and arrogant behavior, to the point where a whole city roared approval on one accord as the anointed one was drafted by the Browns. Moreover, Manziel is not nearly as humble as Cam. Sure, Cam may have wanted to be an entertainer and an icon, but from what I've read about Manziel, he already believes that he is an entertainer and an icon even though he's yet to have his first snap in a game.

 

 

I'm just saying...it's too early to call him a savior or a villain. Just like with Cam, Manziel is going to have to prove what type of person and QB that he is.

I think it's human nature to attack when you or someone you care about is slighted. Get a group mentality that shares a common hero and common perceived villain, and it's a foregone result.

I'm sure every fan message board in sports shares this exact same experience in some way.
