"It's really important to him."

Most people probably honed in on the fact that Dave Gettleman favorably compared Kelvin Benjamin to a "young" Plaxico Burress during his recent XM NFL Radio interview.

“When I watched him, I thought I was watching a young Plaxico (Burress),” said Gettleman. “He’s a better athlete than people realize, he plays faster than a lot of people think and he made some ‘OMG’ catches in the rookie minicamp. He’s talented, he has good focus, he learns well and it’s important to him. It’s really important to him.”

But, to me the most important thing that G-man said about Benjamin is that the rookie basically cares.  He repeated that "it's" important to Benjamin.  Now, I am not going to get into it about what "it" means (yes, pun intended) with less forward thinking Huddlers, but suffice it to say that I am presuming "it" to mean his craft---Benjamin's job.  In other words, Benjamin is placing a premium on getting his successful professional career off to a good start by putting in the work to make an impact upon his team as soon as he is able.  What Gettleman seems to be saying is that as opposed to letting all the outside influences that beset a young man newly drafted into the NFL in the first round muddle his brain, Benjamin has his eyes on the prize.

Sure, G-man was impressed with G-man's progress and development as a WR during his championship career in college (particularly those last four games), but it is obvious that G-man is just as impressed with Benjamin's development as a person---that time when boyhood to manhood is sometimes nebulous and uncomfortable.  From G-man's praise, we can all take pleasure in knowing that Benjamin's transition as a man (thanks to his family and support system) and as a pro have apparently gotten off to a great start.

I think his maturation really began this past year at fsu.

A lot if people were worried because he said he didn't care about football, but it seamed like those same posters forgot at the time we drafted star that he quit football completely and then came back for two years before getting drafted.

Kelvin is in very good hands with this organization, the veteran receivers and Cam (on a side note I wonder who won between those two in madden)

I think at worst he will be a solid #2, borderline #1.

We fix our cap situation with our RBs and DEs, infuse some more talent on the line, get another legit 6'3"+ WR(little bit more big play potential), hunt down another pass catching stud TE at 6'5" or better and we will start transforming into a legit yearly contender! Combine that with adding a shut down corner and solid defensive depth and we are golden. We may look miles away but really, we are right there at sustaining a winning team. We maintain at least a 9-6 record this year and get a little better in certain areas next offseason, sky is the limit. Then we have to worry about other teams luring RR and NippleShorts away from Charlotte

Why would they put the time into building a yearly contender and then leave? That makes zero sense. Once they build a yearly contender, they aren't going anywhere.

To add, it seems DG understands the importance of Chemistry in the locker room being vital towards a team building concept. I strongly feel that anyone that develops a diva complex will be shipped out....no matter how good they are. It seems Dave holds character evaluations in higher regards than GMs that will sign just anybody with great positional success.

In short, I don't see Dave signing many big names while he is here, cap space or not. He wants workers/students of the game/players with something to prove that understand that the team is bigger than themselves

Not saying he would, but each one of us wake up early and deal with the bull crap to make as much as we possibly can, while we can. It's what successful people do. That said, if Dan Snyder or Jerry Jones doubled what he made here then he would be stupid not to go

    • Do you honestly believe this is a team that will even be in contention for a playoff spot this year? To me, if you're not at minimum a genuine playoff caliber team, every win you get is a meaningless win in the end.  This is the NFL, it's not peewee league where you just want to win a few games and have fun, you want to get into the playoffs and have a shot at making a SB run. We haven't had a winning season in how many years?   Does "enjoying" a small handful of wins every year really make for an enjoyable season for you? I said it months ago and I'll say it forever, I don't care about winning or losing this year, as we don't have a playoff caliber roster yet and I'm a realist about where we are as a franchise.  I'd enjoy watching the games so much more if the team and Bryce in particular were just showing marked improvement, even if it came in losses.   Because THAT would give me hope for the future of the franchise and the direction we're going. Bryce was complete garbage in Week 1, in Week 2 he was terrible until the Cardinals went into super soft prevent defense and then collapsed gain when the game was in reach, and he was a serviceable game manager today, but didn't make any throws that any college QB couldn't make. This game was a perfect chance to let Bryce go out there and play loose because of the lead, just let him be himself and see if it sparks his college self.  But instead, we went unbelievably conservative with the play calling to help ensure the win, when actual wins and losses are the least of our worries this year, it's figuring out what Bryce can be (fans may be decided, but the team obviously has not yet).
    • Pretty fair assessment overall. I can’t say a lot since I didn’t watch but going by the comments I am betting he (Canales) was very conservative and a large reason would be to prevent Bryce giving it away half the day.
