It’s easy to point to the defensive side of the ball and suggest the Panthers are only good now because of a better defense and not because Newton is a good quarterback. That is the wrong angle to look at this young quarterback and his franchise.

The real question is why were the Panthers bad during Newton’s first two seasons. He has always produced statistically and been ahead of the curve in terms of his development. A limited supporting cast on offense and an underwhelming defense simply held the franchise back from team success.

Now that the team is good and the nonsensical P.R. attacks based on body language have been eradicated, we can really focus on what Newton is.

Newton is a developing quarterback who is quickly becoming one of the best in the NFL at his position. Last season, he affirmed that idea by becoming less of a risky playmaker and more of a refined quarterback.

Agreed!!!!!!

However, as most outside observers, they failed to mention Rivera blowing games, and not being a "REAL" Head Coach until last season (I'm sure aided by the arrival of the much experienced, savvy Gettleman).

The offense was fine his first two seasons. It was the defense, and Rivera's game management that were horrendous. Even the defense was blowing games the early part of Cam's third season as well.

Thanks

If I read the article correctly, Byron Bell was supposed to protect against the corner blitz.

"On the second phase of the blocking, we can see that both inside linebackers are dropping into coverage and the cornerback doesn’t blitz, but he is accounted for because of the positioning of the right tackle."

I read that too...but he also said Bell's momentum carried him into the flat.  Kind of contradicting points.

Plus just watching the gif, it's obvious Bell attempted to block the guy.

Sure Rivera made some mistakes which new coaches do.  But his game management wasn't that different last year except he took more chances on 4th down. You can't say his game management sucked one year and was great the next based on a total of 10 fourth quarter plays out of a total of 500 offensive plays.  Part of the reason for the change was trusting Cam's development and the ability to make plays and read defenses that he didn't so great in his first 2 years.  The offense wasn't fine his first 2 years.  There were way too many three and outs and inconsistent play.  Sure we hit more long plays and home runs but much of that was due to being behind and having to throw to catch up.  We definitely couldn't win we when we had to which is evident is how many fourth quarter comebacks we had last year versus the previous 2 seasons.  It is easy to just blame Shula and Rivera for the offense and give everyone else a pass but that is plain wrong and is most frequently spouted by Newton huggers or Shula haters.
