Steve Smith was going to retire after the 2014 season

He can say what ever he wants now but the Panthers gave him the opportunity to have the career that he has and the life he has. All his bluster and BS helped get him a ticket out of here and he has no one to blame for that but himself. If we could only know what went down between him and teammates in the locker room.....we all know about his violent episodes in the past.. You can deny it all you want, but the reality is something was going down with him and other teammates.....and that was causing a problem. The comments from RR and hs past history sure point that way.

Some people believe that if Smith had told The FO about his retirement plans after 2014, then that may have softened the FO's stance, but after reading David Newtons article regarding Smith's sentiment in the SI interview, Newton apparently isn't one of them.  Newton has a point (though I still would have loved to see Smitty play in the slot with Benjamin and someone else on the outside).  At the end of the day, maybe David Newton is 100 percent correct in that Smith's presence would have stunted our young receivers' growth.

To have kept Smith for a farewell tour would not have helped the Carolina offense progress. It would not have allowed young receivers such as Tavarres KingMarvin McNuttBrenton Bersinand Kealoha Pilares to get the time on the field that they need to prove themselves.

"But I'm going to take a few people down with me. Not in spite, but just fun. I'm going to enjoy playing ball again. I'm going to have fun here."

That is a good thing, because there were times Smith didn't appear to be having fun last season with Carolina. He deserves to have fun at this point in his career.

But it was time for the Panthers to move on.

Even if it postponed Smith's retirement.

Steve stirring the pot, nonstop...... people forget steve wanted to be traded during his career. More than once too, so steve can change his feelings. The time behind a mic hes learned how to be more of a attention grabber.

Sure it would.....he doesn't have that in the tank anymore

He seemed fine against the Niners with a bad leg. Maybe if he wasn't facing constant double teams (like he won't be facing as a #3 slot guy this year) or if we were throwing the ball a lot (like we weren't this year) he'd have had better numbers.

    • Ppl want to trade Melo? Am I wrong for thinking that would be a bad idea?
    • Some of you act like one can't learn from experience over time. Just because you may not know what you're doing in 2018 doesn't mean that you don't know what you're doing in 2025. Frankly, you grow from experience, and success and excellence gives first-time applicants the hand probably 99.999% of the time.
    • It's an interesting topic of conversation as sports evolves. I think ultimately it would lead to a number of small market franchises folding though. Especially in the NBA where there are so many bad teams that have been bad for years and years in some cases already. But as it stands I think athlete pay draft or no draft aside has reached a point where we can and should realistically ask should they make that much compared to the average person. Now college athletes is a different conversation but even that reaches a breaking point. But we could go down the rabbit hole on this even further into overall entertainment and talk about actors making absurd sums too. In the end I think in sports the powers that be won't allow these changes to even be considered because it opens the door for so many other variables. But who knows how long sports like football will realistically be around after people like us pass on. We're only just now learning about things like CTE which the league and the sport in general will only be able to run away from for so long. As far as the NBA goes my understanding is viewership has been steadily going down for a number of reasons but one crucial aspect is key players missing so many games. The NBA has to figure that out regardless. Especially when considering fans who pay to see these athletes compete in person. But hey I guess let's just try to appreciate what we've got while it still exists in this form eh?
