RIP Chuck Noll

Chuck Noll, the Hall of Fame coach who led the Steelers to four Super Bowls in the 1970s, died Friday at the age of 82, according to numerous reports out of Pittsburgh, the Associated Press and CNN.

According to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, Noll's wife, Marianne, found him unresponsive at 9:45 p.m. ET. She called 911, and paramedics pronounced him dead at 9:55 p.m.

Noll had stayed out of the public eye in recent years, because, as CNN writes, he had suffered from Alzheimer's and heart problems.

In 1969, he took over a Steelers squad that had produced only two winning seasons in the previous nine years, and Pittsburgh promptly went 1-13 in Noll's first season. But by 1972, Noll (along with quarterback Terry Bradshaw, a 22-year-old running back named Franco Harris and one of the NFL's best defenses) led Pittsburgh to an 11-3 record and the franchise's first playoff appearance in 25 years.

From 1972-79, the Noll led the Steelers to an 88-27-1 regular-season record without ever missing the playoffs and while winning Super Bowls IX, X, XIII and XIV. Overall, he sported a 209-156-1 record, and he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1993.

 

 

Sat what you want about Steeler fans, but Coach Noll was one of the greats.

Chuck was one of the greats along side Landry.  Hate both teams but I am not retarded enough to not recognize coaches of historical significnce.

A couple of days ago someone mentioned great franchises and how they started.   Pittsburgh was one of the worst ever until Knoll took over.

 

Took a blue collar team in a blue collar town to the top of the NFL for nearly a decade.    I dated a girl in northwesten Pennsylvania in 1981 and could only remember the ONE FOR THE THUMB IN 81 theme for the Steelers.

 

Knoll never showed too much emotion but damn his teams were tough.  Tomlin and even Cohwer will never come out to fhe shadow of the greatest coach in Franchise history.

my moms side of the family lived in PA and had been there for at least a couple generations and they were all steeler fans. the identity that team had pretty well matched the people there. very tough hard working blue collar types who took pride in what they did. the steelers weren't my favorite team back in the 70s, but i sure loved them and loved getting to watch them and that team just had so many characters. noll wasn't one of the guys that stood out, but i doubt that team wouldn't have been able to stick together and operate so well as a unit for so long without him. RIP chuck noll
