Outlook

As I said earlier, this team is not as strong on paper as it was a year ago. There are a lot of unanswered questions going into camp at various positions.

One thing I do know is that the Panthers have an excellent coaching staff and they will get the most out of every player. While Carolina may not repeat as division champs, they will challenge for a wild card playoff spot.

A little clarification for readers...

 

The article refers to Olsen as a "move' tight end.  A "move" tight end is one that can line up all over the field and be a threat.  Other TEs referred to this way are guys like Tony Gonzalez, Jimmy Graham and Aaron Hernandez.  Not that different from a primarily receiving tight end but designated 'move' because they move around in formation.

 

You might also see the term "joker" tight end used for this type, though "joker" is meant more to describe the type of player who's a hybrid tight end/wide receiver.  There's good discussion of that here: Breaking Down the Joker Tight Ends

So how many times did he line up at WR this year. I wonder if he can make the same case that Graham can make which is that he is a WR who plays TE and needs to be paid accordingly.

And one other note of interest...

 

The author's name isn't listed at the top of the article, but his Twitter handle is found at the bottom.

 

For the curious, his name is Greg Gabriel (no relation to Roman Gabriel that I know of) and let's just say he's been at this for a while.  Gabriel spent 30 years working as an NFL scout, his last nine years (2001-2010) as Director of College Scouting for the Chicago Bears.

 

Prior to joining the Bears, Gabriel worked as an area scout from 1985 to 2001 for...the New York Giants.

 

Dave Gettleman joined the Giants in 1998 as a scout.  He became Director of Pro Personnel the following year.

 

So yeah, Gabriel and Gettleman were colleagues from 1998 to 2001.

I won't claim to have broken that down, but I'd imagine it was fairly frequent given that Olsen was arguably our best receiver last year.

 

Probably shouldn't come as a surprise in a base Coryell offense, honestly.  Multiple formations are a big part of the attack.

I really don't believe we looked better on paper last season than this season. I just don't get that at all.

LT was absolutely better and cam had a  couple years experience with two WRs he was going to be throwing to. while we think that these WRs we have are going to be more consistent and reliable, it's still very much an unknown.

 Everyone knows the LT situation was better but I honestly don't know how the receivers we have this season don't look better on paper than they did last year. Our  secondary looks better on paper. Our defensive line looks better on paper than it did knowing what we know about our rookies. Our QB looks better on paper than he did. Our running game looks better on paper with a healthy on paper backfield and a stronger on paper interior line with a center not coming back from a season ending injury/surgery. The linebackers also look better on paper knowing Luke really is an all pro and Klein and Blackburn can contribute.We had no idea what we had in the safety position and now on paper we have all kinds of veterans as well as Robert Lester who can contribute. We know that Melvin White is a piece to work with and have another veteran in Cason coming in. On paper we look better to me than we did going into last season.....on paper.

      With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.

      Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.

      Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
