Lance Stephenson signing and it's big picture impact

Recommended Posts

Like it or not we are in the age of social media and marketing...we need to land players and names in both sports that we can market to compete with big markets city's...this isn't the 60s and 70s you need big names to attract other big names to the city as a whole....look at Cleveland, if you honestly think that Johnny football and the browns as a whole taking the right steps didn't make Cleveland a more attractive location for Lebron than you don't understand today's culture and mentality surrounding sports and marketing

If you don't understand that Johnny Football isn't a flea on Lebron's nutsack then I don't know what to tell you.  Manziel going to Cleveland didn't have poo to do with Lebron's decision.

As a UNC fan, I wish the Hornets would've taken Harrison Barnes over MKG.  I wish HB could get out of Golden State.  He's just never gonna get the touches and looks he needs with Curry and Thompson bombing away.  Maybe they'll still swing a trade for Love involving Thompson.

Ok understand this it's a simple concept, we actually learn in sports marketing classes in school, marketability draws interest and exposure...we get more nationally televised games because we re good and people want to see cam play....Johnny football hasn't played and nfl snap but is one of the most talked about names in sports, he's marketed his self, you can bet that the browns will be on tv more due to people wanting to see him play and he isn't even the starter yet, pair that with the cavs and Lebron , Cleveland sports will be one of the most talked about and analyzed topics in the next few months, which I garuntee will make it easier for the browns to acquire more FAs....people wanted to see lance play in the playoffs #1 due to his playmaking abilities and #2 his antics, more national exsposure draws more national attention, more fans from other areas, and most importantly makes it a more desirable location for players who want more exsposure....this isn't a football or basketball only topic...it's about the culture of CLT sports as a whole, once again lance isn't a tier 1 superstar but with the exception of maybe al Jefferson he's the biggest name on the roster! Cam is despite what the media might say, a legit superstar! You can expect this to have an impact in coming years!

If we would've sucked last year & Big Al wouldn't have had as big a season as he did leading us to the playoffs, then no, Lance would not make us attractive. Hell he wouldn't have even picked us over Indy in that scenario. But I believe what the OP is saying is that we are making steps toward being an attractive destination. Not totally because of Lance, but because of the combination of stars(not superstars) & winning. Big Al with the combination of our playoff run helped us land Lance. Big Al, Lance, & hopefully the emergence of our supporting cast mixed with a deep playoff run might attract an even a bigger name than Lance, so on, and so on.

How many FAs were knocking down doors to go to the Dolphins because the Heat had a good basketball squad? Or the Bears during the 90s when MJ was running poo?

I'm excited about the future of both teams, but having Cam on the Panthers or a big name guy on the Hornets in the future will be a .00001% factor in a FA's mind when choosing a team to play for.

Which proves the worth of sports marketing classes.

The signing of what's his face to the hornets means jack dick to our ability to sign NFL free agents. We really don't have an issue in attracting talent if we want it. We could sign/trade for andre johnson tomorrow if we had the cap room. The Panthers are very respected around the league by players. But we aren't a big name free agency team in general.

Also the Hornets of the mid 90's with Mourning/Johnson/Curry had bigger names. We have been there.

Johnny Football is nothing compared to Lebron.  Lebron doesn't need help to get exposure.  He could've went anywhere and the media and money would follow.  Hell, he did go pretty much "anywhere".  Cleveland is about as shitty of a market as you could pick among NBA cities.  To imply that he needs the help of someone like Manziel who is right now nothing more than a flavor of the month is comical.  We're a global economy now.  It doesn't matter where you play, the sponsorship money and attention will be there for you if you're a brand they can capitalize on.  Durant and Westbrook are doing just fine in OKC.  Cam is doing quite well here in Charlotte.  You no longer have to be in a NYC or LA to garner the major attention and big bucks.

If you paid some school to educate you on marketing concepts, I regretfully inform you that you wasted your money.  Sorry about that English too.  This coming from a guy who has worked in marketing almost exclusively for the past 7 years.

Haha the old english insult...it's an online Internet forum get over yourself....and once again I'm not saying lance himself is gonna bring all star FA but continued success in both sports makes CLT a more attractive location...big names might think twice about picking another destination over us if they see other big names doing that...sorry your thinking too literally about my post, the original concept of which was brought to my attention this morning on a national sports radio show, so someone with a little more credibility odviosily agrees with the concept I'm trying to exspress

I'm usually not much of a grammar nazi, but if you want to be taken seriously you really have to do better than that. And national sports radio? What credibility is that? What does a sports radio jock know about marketing concepts? Hell, those guys just rattle on about anything and everything to get a couple of viewers.

NFL is different than NBA. NFL players go where the money is. Shoot Mario Williams went from Houston to Buffalo!?!

in the NBA- players want to go to the spotlight and where other stars are. Now, i will say that if Lance and Al and Kemba put together a nice playoff run, players will want to come here even more. Lance would have never come here if it wasnt for Al Jefferson-- Jefferson woulda never come here if it wasnt for Kemba (and the $$$). But within the past 2 years, Hornet basketball has had a great turnaround.
