Speed & Quickness at WR

I'm fine with it too.  The point of the thread was to highlight the battle for that Ginn-type role on offense.  I think many have been assuming KB/Jerricho/Avant are getting the bulk of catches but maybe Avant ends up being more of a minimal role a la Hixon and one of the 3 in the OP contributes more.

I don't know why I keep forgetting Underwood.  He looked as good as Ginn ever has last season (not looking at KR/PR)...and that was with Glennon throwing him the ball.  He definitely has the opportunity here to get some numbers and contribute quite nicely.

Yeah I'm trying to be cautiously optimistic, but I'm hoping that Underwood turns some heads this year.

Having steady handed targets like Cotchery, Avant, and Olsen is what will make the difference in this offense. We struggled in the red zone late last year, but Kelvin will help with that. Obviously Benjamin is still a rookie, but he will be learning, you can't learn his size though.

I honestly think Avant will lead the team in receptions (and 1st down receptions). I don't think we'll have any "speed" guy getting more than like 20 receptions. Only if Philly Brown can turn into Victor Cruz, but nobody thinks that will happen. Olsen will lead in yards, KB in TDs and the rest will contribute to smaller degrees.

Underwood has been in the league for 5 years and still hasn't proved that he can contribute a lot at the receiver position. I think it's much more likely Philly Brown or Tavarres King gets the spot of "speed receiver" or at least gets the chance to win it. They are question marks but at least we haven't seen them in the league not contributing much.

Underwood has speed, but I read somewhere that it takes him a little more time to get to top speed.  He is not as quick as Ginn.  Perhaps he has better hands though.  Like our other FA pick-ups, I personally believe that he is best suited for a support role  (and all you have to do is glean his entire body of work).

Of course it's not necessarily a bad thing that we have free agents that would be WR3/4s somewhere else because we have proven that we can have modest success with these JAGs.  I am just wouldn't put money on us being able to overcome the top echelon teams in the league, who probably only got better, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

As I have mentioned countless times, Denarius Moore would fill that speed-big-play guy role if he ends up on the roster somehow (hopefully sooner rather than later).  But, who knows, maybe Tavares King can fill that role as he had plenty of big plays coming out of college.

Kelvin is not fast but with his size he can get chunk yards..... which is almost just as good..... he agile enough to make db"s pay.

His numbers tells us that he accelerates late rather than early. This means he will maintain high speeds through routes rather than being to explode off the line. He will be susceptible to getting jacked at the line and slowed there, but he also has the potential to be able to set up very nasty things with his deceptive speed. Quick slants and deep posts could yield him giant yardage. Any route where he doesnt have to stop or curl is going to be very good for him.

Neither was Ginn. He didn't do anything special coming into Carolina. He saw the field barely at all in SF. Give underwood a shot. Probably won't go off and have a break out year, but he will be a thread deep and will stretch the field.

I like our WR corps a lot. Gives Cam something he has never had. Route consistency and Hands.

That's sounds like what people said about Ginn coming in but with even less faith...except Underwood produced 2 consecutive 400+ yard and 2+ TD seasons in a row with Glennon and Freeman throwing the ball.

    • I'm really not stressing about upgrading from Bryce. I'm frustrated with our inability (or refusal) to recognize overall bad QB performance and failure to seriously address the issue. QB is the most impactful position on the field, and we're not only settling for what we've been given to this point, but we've rewarded it with a fully guaranteed 5th year extension for a player that's never played 2 NFL franchise QB quality games back to back in 3 seasons. I can't understand how that's ok from a coach's or GM's viewpoint. Successful franchises don't do things like this. It just doesn't make sense.  We do not have a top half of the league QB right now. Since we don't have that player, we should be looking for him. Pickett isn't it. Grier isn't it. Bryce hasn't proven he is yet. Until you have that sure fire franchise QB, you keep looking. You're not consistently making the playoffs, a deep run, or a SB appearance without one.  What's the worst that could happen? We end up with 2 potential number 1 QBs? How horrible.
    • Easy to understand Pickett, if this is anywhere close to on point. Canales wants to get as close to Bryce as he can- get the pace and timing in the throws as close a he can to Bryce. So the other players don’t have to adjust so much, to a new guy.       If Cam was the 1, he would look for a rocket arm.  But Bryce is the 1. Look for limited in the same way.  Low velocity, plenty of air under it, feels just like home when Picket comes in. And you have the guys on the second team not having such a radical adjustment (if they have to play) like with Dalton to Bryce.    Enter Grier. I guess we will collect those types.
    • Best part is if we draft him, we can also use him as our fourth and one QB sneaker
