David Newton: KB is camp MVP, solidifies #1 WR spot

"With apologies to coach Ron Rivera, who said defensive end Frank Alexander was the star of camp, (in my opinion,) it has been the 6-foot-5, 240-pound phenom from Florida State.

...

Outside of who would start at left tackle,...who would replace the franchise's all-time leading receiver, Steve Smith, was the biggest question entering camp.

It's not a question leaving camp.

Benjamin made Smith, not here for the first time since 2001, an afterthought.

...

Benjamin still has areas he needs to improve, however.

"We saw him do the things we needed him to do, but it's not just about going out and making great catches," Rivera said "It's about knowing the offense. ... And there's some things that if teams are doubling you, or teams are rolling to you, they're trying to take you out.

"And if you're not doing things within what we're trying to do, that can hurt us.

"So he's young. He's got a lot to learn."

...

"There's a lot of things that play into it," Rivera said. "But hopefully, barring something crazy, those two guys (Cam and KB) play together 10 years here in Charlotte and for the Panthers and make a big mark."

I just hope they don't give KB the Smith treatment for the "next 10 years" and find a second WR to go along with him. Teams are going to be doubling KB this season, I just hope it doesn't hurt his development.

But I saw that RR quote the other day and It's sure exciting to think about. Cam and KB for the next 10 years sure would be a solid base for an O

<p>http://espn.go.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/7896/camp-confidential-carolina-panthersDavid Newton quote on JStew

  • Running back Jonathan Stewart has spent so much time on the stationary bike rehabbing injuries the past three training camps that some are wondering whether he's training for the Tour de France.

-"First-round draft pick Kelvin Benjamin has emerged as a legitimate No. 1.... Benjamin has made more spectacular catches in his first few weeks of camp than arguably any receiver in Carolina history."

-"Don't sleep on the Panthers," Pro Bowl fullback Mike Tolbert said.

I've quietly moved from expecting a 600-700 yard season from him and expecting a Kenan Allen Rookie type season from him.

This is preseason hype. It's easy to feel that way but give this guy time to grow. I wanna feel that way too but it's wayyyy to early. Need to see more of him and cam. I'd temper expectations but still be excited about the possibilities

I'm officially over Brandin Cooks. I've gotten through the heartbreak and can see that this really is the best thing for me, umm, us. Kelvin is special and he and Cam have such a connection off the field , that it can only enhance their relationship on the field. So happy to have him here !

    • You're assuming just as well.   Morgan and Canales were hired 3 days apart.  I believe it was partially due to their connections in Seattle.  i believe Tepper wanted some familiarity with his GM and HC.  It is so easy to sit back and arm-chair QB over draft picks.  You don't know what the philosophy was going into the 2024 draft.  I believe Canales and Morgan were drafting for the future.  XL and Brooks point to that philosophy. Name me one GM that is 100% on draft picks.  Just one.  You're not going to find one.    I think year one picks weren't for what can you do for me now but Potential.   XL hasn't lived up to the hype of a 1st rounder.  I think we all can agree on that. However, there still is hope he comes around.  What I believe they saw in him was his speed after the catch.  He needs to get more consistent but when he gets the ball you kind of hold your breath just a second because if he gets free, he's gone.  The Brooks pick was a signing for the future, and no one could have guessed he would re-injure the same ACL.  This makes the pick look bad but Dallas was ready to draft him later that same round.  IMO we'll have to see what happens next season before we can call this a bust. Wallace has improved each season and for a third rounder has done well.  Sanders has shown flashes and considering the pick in the 4th round it wasn't a bad pick.  His sophomore season IMO was a little bit more productive.  Smith-Wade has been a good addition and has played well.  For a 5th round pick to get as much playing time as he has.  Most picks below round 3 should take a couple of years to get up to speed.  He's been a decent player.  Crumedy, no comment We turned Barrett into Jackson.  This was an amazing move and basically got a starting CB for a 7th round pick.  Pretty shrewd if you ask me. Coker, maybe the best Free Agent signing of the 2024 draft class. So, in short, you can't say that the draft was a bust.  It isn't a home run but all but one are still on the team and outside of Brooks have made contributions to wins.  2025 draft class has been much better with almost every pick making contributions this season.  Now take Fitterer's two years and compare them to Morgan and tell me that they have the same philosophy.
    • He hasn’t led crap, he’s on loaded teams and a piece of the puzzle. And he’s he has improved drastically but it took the ultimate QB whispers in Shanahan and KOC. You put him on this Panther team and he’s back to normal Darnold
    • Slavin and Jarvis week to week. Florida cheap shots took out our two best players.  I’d start KK so he can beat the brakes off someone.
