Rivera on Cam: "He's got to develop as a passer."

Rivera used Michael Jordan as an example:

"Michael Jordan used to go to the hole all the time and dunk, make spectacular layups and stuff like that," Rivera said. "But if you ask Michael, he learned that later in his career he had to develop that jumper. So he went to work at it.

"Cam's the same way. He knows he's got to develop as a passer."

...

"In an interesting way, (Cam's ankle surgery) might have been the best thing to happen to him in terms of his pure quarterbacking development," Rivera said following Thursday's practice. “If you watch what he’s done this year compared to what he’s done the first couple of years, he’s been in the pocket,” Rivera said. “He’s had to go through his progressions, had to go through his reads.

“He’s had to stay in the pocket, had to have good footwork, had to step into his throws. I think this has been a plus for him.”

David Newton adds:

"In other words, Newton has had to rely on his arm and the mental aspects of his game more so than his legs...That is key, because there will come a time when Newton no longer can depend on his scrambling"

Charlotte Observer:

"Throughout training camp – when Newton was finally able to practice in team drills – Newton would occasionally finish a play grimacing after having stepped on a teammate’s foot or planted incorrectly.

Newton admits there’s still pain in the ankle, but Rivera thinks Newton was one play away Sunday from learning he’s back to 100 percent.

With 8:30 left in the first half against the Chiefs, Newton scrambled to his right to avoid linebacker Joe Mays. Unable to find an open receiver and unwilling to throw it away, Newton ran back toward the middle of the field where he met Mays again, this time for a sack.

“I’ll be honest with you, when he was scrambling around the other day, if he had tucked it and ran, then to me in his mind he was ready 100 percent,” Rivera said. “When he all of a sudden cuts it loose and completely lets it go, then I believe he believes. And that’ll be enough to convince me.”

He does need to develop as a pocket passer and this injury has help push him further that way. I don't think anything Rivera said was untrue and it's good to work on a weakness. If he becomes better in that area which I fully expect. Newton will be able to do both efficiently and frighten defenses even more.

Rivera smh. How can you disrespect our QB and give him no fuging line to be a pocket passer with. You better hope we have a winning season this year. Stop talking to the media you idiot.

I don't have words...

meh, let ESPN blow it up. Just more crow for them to eat when we prove it on the field. And I don't think it's RR disrespecting Cam at all. Disrespect would be to say nothing or only fluff comments about Cam. He's a grown ass man. Let him use it as fuel to continue to improve.

    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
