Godfrey not at fault in Bucs' first touchdown.

There are too many threads bashing Godfrey for me to put this in all of them, so I figured I would just post it separately.

"[C]ornerback Melvin White was supposed to make contact with receiver Chris Owusu. Instead, Owusu had a free path down the sideline after White allowed him to have a free released."

While Godfrey is not the best at coverage. I believe it is unfair to give him so much crap for a play in which Melvin White was at the very least equally at fault.

OK fine, but explain why we have to go through this song and dance so often with the same player?  It seems every blown coverage has Godfrey somewhere in the picture.  It may not all be his fault but we can all agree that he isn't good enough to make up for any type of on-field mistake.

Godfrey had two men coming into his zone, one down the seam and another along the side-line. If White disrupts the outside receiver, then Godfrey potentially has more time to get over.

People can be upset with Godfrey all they want, but they should hold White equally responsibly in this touchdown. I just don't think Godfrey is as bad as people on this forum seem to think.

Seems like there always has to be a player with a target on their back. Byron has been there, but I guess he held them off for this week.

I don' think anyone is basing their assessment of Godfrey off of one play yesterday. If there is a target on his back it is because he placed it there with years of horrible play. Look at the advanced stats and where he has ranked as a safety throughout his career.

Wait, you don't have to do that... just go back and watch the number of huge passes and missed tackles he has given up as a starter. Now he's a backup and as soon as he steps into a position where he has to be counted on, a TD is given up.

Go look up the advanced stats from his time as a starter.

Melvin White missed his jam, but Godfrey was still out of position. I didn't see the seam route on the initial replay, but if the nickel or LB is playing deep enough in the middle, Godfrey had no reason to be that far up.

I'm not rallying against him for one play yesterday, he has been horrible for a long time. I advocated that he be moved to corner before he ever had the injury, but now he is coming off of that injury and appears even slower to react as a result.

I am with you on the cornerback transition, and the play where he made the tackle on third to end their drive he was playing nickle. I think that is where he belongs.

He needs to be an inside the box safety/nickle, something like a rover.

Also, the play looked like a PA, which probably froze the LBs and cause Godfrey to hesitate to drop back into his zone. It looks like the PA is what kept White from pressing. Either way, the defense was beat, but we won and they will adjust, both White and Godfrey.

Thats fine and good, but the point of a zone is that you pickup the man that comes into your zone. Godfrey did not.

Didn't have time that was the point of the Jam at the line, to give him time to make it over if the route went deep and to also throw off timing.

Haha, man. Some dudes just really want to trash Godfrey.

Pretty much.

Lets not focus on a huge third down stuff he made in open field 1 on 1.  No no, lets blame him for stuff because it is easier than blaming the guy at fault.

That seems to be the rationale.

There were ppl that were blaming Godfrey for the TD that Evans fell and caught but it was called incomplete because Evans didn't re-establish himself after going out of bounds.

smh

He's not very good and had one season where he just happened to have the other teams' QBs throw it to him, but he isn't a bum like some folks make him out to be.

    • I can always count on yout to put things so delicately lol. I'm still not sold on the fact that Tepper will make them keep him if they don't see him as a long term answer.
    • holy poo... this thread inspired me to keep trying to guess passwords to various alts I've created over the years and I finally got in! I pretty much accepted my fate as a lurker for the last several months because I could not remember my password. I didn't realize that new users couldn't join either, that explains things. I have been around for years under several different monikers, through the good and bad. I too always find myself coming back here even with all of the new social media options for Panther fan engagement. It's simply nostalgic.   I do get extremely annoyed with the same 5-10 posters shitting on Bryce and complaining about everything. It's unfortunate that half of them are mods and that nobody new can join because now I pretty much just come on here and see Bryce / Panther slander. There is barely any positivity to be had. We all watch this team and hang on this forum for entertainment purposes only. We have no control or say in anything. I used to be such a crazy ass fan that would argue with strangers about Cam newton on the internet and at games. Now, as a father of 3, a business owner and someone with way gnarlier life problems - I like to watch football and talk about football as an escape. Not to bitch more. I really like the direction of the team and will root anyone in a Panthers jersey. I live down the street from the Rams practice facility, Matthew Stafford is currently coaching his daughters flag football team in the same program I coach my sons. I have two highly ranked Rams staff members sons on my team. The way we beat them and had them on the ropes in the playoffs has me feeling amazing, and you would think we have the next great thing in Bryce with the way they all speak of him. I'm gonna ride that high and be a delusional fan, I hope that huddle can stick around or get fixed and perhaps I will get back to posting more now that I can log in again. I will do my best to not get banned. Keep Pounding!
    • Well, if they know Tepper wants to keep Bryce there is an an implied safety net there in case he fails. A possibility that he will be empathetic and •maybe• not fire them.  If they go against that and bring in someone else and that fails they are in a much worse spot.  IMO.  And another factor may be that after all those years of instability and musical chairs pre Bryce there will likely be a feeling of security in knowing what they have.   Kind of like settling just to keep from going through the process all over again.     IOW I think he really needs to fug up bad to lose his job and change our course.
