USA TODAY Sports: With Panthers quarterback Cam Newton banged up with rib and ankle injuries, should Carolina limit the amount of hits he takes?

Irvin: “It’s going to be difficult to eliminate all of it, and I don’t think you should eliminate all of it, because then, you make it tantamount to others that are sitting in the pocket, and you forego one of his greatest gifts that he can move. How they can strategically use that, without putting him in harms’ way is key for the Panthers’ success.”

USA TODAY Sports: How important is Steve Smith going against his former team in this match up?

Irvin: “This is the game I want to watch most of all because I love Steve Smith. That’s my guy. He’s so physical. We had Joe Flacco on the set the other day and I asked him: ‘Is Anquan Boldin back in Baltimore, but he’s just a little shorter?’ He said, ‘My god, Michael, you hit it on the head.’ He’s the primary receiver now.

“That offense sputtered because it did not have that tough guy after Boldin went to San Francisco. And kudos to (general manager) Ozzie Newsome for getting what his offense was missing.”

but I found this the most interesting...sure hope Cam reads this.  And Luke.

USA TODAY Sports: Some analysts picked the Green Bay Packers in the beginning of the season to be a Super Bowl contender, but they’ve struggled. Has power in the NFC North shifted elsewhere?

Irvin: “When we were praising Aaron Rodgers when he was moving around and making plays and we said he was the No. 1 quarterback in the league, he really had some tools around him. Here’s what happens when we have to take money from everybody to make sure the quarterback has $100-something-million contract, now, we have to give you less players to work with, and you have to make it look good. That’s where they’re falling off.

“They lost Greg Jennings and James Jones. Now you have Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. And people are doing things to try to take those guys out. Yes, the powers in that division have shifted and they’ve shifted to the team that Green Bay plays coming up this week.”

It's a very valid observation.

Well Cam has lack luster talent around him now without a big deal, so why should him or his agent take less money hoping that will change? Cam has all the leverage. Not to take away from these young guys, but when you line up and your two WRs are Bersin and Philly Brown, two guys nobody outside of the Panthers have ever heard of, you're already playing like Cam has a huge contract.

you act like every wr on other teams are some big knowns.

i have no idea who the bears have outside of marshall and jeffery.

i have no idea who gb has outside of cobb and nelson.

ect, ect. ect.

we need one more explosive weapon for Cam on O at WR. then we needed solid guys in the mold of jcho and avant, but younger.

we are not as far off as far as weapons as some people would make it seem.

Organizations that have followed the 'pay one superstar a bajillion dollars and skimp everywhere else' formula of team building haven't exactly won a lot of Super Bowls.

And that doesn't even apply only to quarterbacks.  Look at the Lions in the Barry Sanders era.

I guess they don't realize how far SS has fallen, he has blinded them with something.

He is absolutely correct about the $100 million contract and that has been my thoughts on the impending contract with Cam. We have already seen here .

I don't agree that they should pay Cam half our salary cap. I also didn't believe we should tag Hardy and we see how that is playing out. My point was its not like Cam is playing with an Elite WR group or even a half decent oline group, so you really can't sell him on that. The only thing you can do is hope that he trusts you to build talent around him. They've done a C- job of that so far in his career. It's becoming even more obvious how void of talent we are now that Cam isn't running around being Superman.
