Carolina is allowing 5.7 yards per rush...let's put that into historical perspective...

If the season ended today, it would be the second worst performance in the history of the NFL.

Only the 6.4 ypc given up by the 1934 Cincinnati Reds (yes, they were a football team) would top it for sheer futility.

Obviously, this will not continue for the entire season.

The performance has been so poor, it is almost impossible not to give some credence to the notion that certain off field distractions have contributed.

The Bears are coming off a loss to Green Bay in which they gashed the Packers for 235 yards rushing.

Prior to last week, however, the Bears had rushed for 60, 46 and 86 yards respectively in games against the Jets, 49'ers and Bills.

What gives???

I say the DL is embarrassed and decides they want to play football, Thomas Davis returns and the Panthers again look like the defensive unit we have come to expect.

There have been a ton of Jekyll and Hyde type performances in the NFL this season...there is just no way this defense is as poor as it has looked the last two weeks.

This defense is still coming together.  We have had significant changes and the loss of Hardy is something I now know cannot be underestimated.

I agree we will be a lot better this next game, but we still have a long way to go.

Though honestly if we are gashed in the running game again I wouldn't be overly surprised either.

This Chicago game will determine the entire season. If we come out flat and lose again, and lose so bad that DA plays the 4th qtr again then I am not kidding, Tank for the 1st pick and Rivera and the coaching staff has to go. Because it will be crystal clear that the players have quit on Rivera for reasons unknown, im sorry but if we get blown out three weeks in a row, thats players quitting on the coaches pure and simple.

If we bounce back and win, no doubt we have a winning season and possibly make the playoffs. This is truely a must win. We are at home, back in our element in a 1:00 PM game, with no silly distractions or story line. If we lose im fully convinced we go 2-14 or 3-13

If the season were to end today the Panthers would win the division and be in the playoffs.  Probably the first team to give up 6.4 ypc and get into the playoffs.

Thats another stat

24 teams have finished the regular season giving up more than 5 yards a carry.

Surprisingly, 4 actually made the playoffs, the last being the 2012 Colts.

Go figure.

Don't get your logic on players quit on coaches if we get blown out three weeks in a row.

so by your standards we should have tanked after starting 1-3 last yr.

Next game is important but it is still early.

    • Neither Barkley nor even a healthy CMC would move the needle much for us. Those are guys that impact teams that already have impressive overall offenses and defenses, so they can perform the complimentary roles that make them actually valuable. We should know that specifically because CMC almost never moved the needle on bad Panthers team after bad Panthers team. Ask Giants fans about that with Saquon.
    • I would generally disagree. You see a lot more load management than previously but that is because being healthy in the playoffs is such a key factor. Different philosophies in that regard than previous generations.  Baseball really doesn't matter until at least halfway through the season. I am not gonna say they don't play hard but the physical demands are infinitesimal in the MLB in comparison to basically any other major pro sport.  People dislike all the shooting these days but that's a direct correlation with how much the overall skill level of the average NBA player has drastically risen over the past 15ish years. There are other aggravating factors, certainly, but that is the biggest one in terms of playing style differences. So many of the guys from the 80's and 90's wouldn't even be able to play in the modern NBA at all. The biggest problem the NBA has with the American market(they are the only US sport that has any real international appeal or interest, minus the NHL) is that they are so steadily corrupt and fix the systems against the small market teams. Well, you eventually lose a big chunk of the league viewership/potential viewership in the process. Take the very obviously fixed NBA draft lotteries. Superstar and upper tier star players rarely want to play for small market teams, nor can they usually afford to pay them. So how do you expect them to possibly compete in that environment?
