Cam not interested in pay-as-you-go Kaepernick/Dalton contract, wants huge money upfront

The Panthers have not held any contract talks with star quarterback Cam Newton, the first-overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, since this summer and none are planned, but it was made clear to the franchise at that time that Newton was not interested in doing a contract similar to the structure of Andy Dalton or Colin Kaepernick, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Those deals included small amounts of signing bonus/upfront money, and in essence were “pay-as-you-go” deals, with the quarterbacks having to be on the roster by a certain point each season in order to achieve the following season's payout. Those types of deals provide extreme flexibility for the clubs, and require a very limited full financial commitment that is guaranteed for skill, injury and for salary-cap purposes. Sources said Newton's talks with the Panthers did not extend far but the team understood that signing him long-term would require a substantial full guarantee, much more in the $50-plus million rage that top quarterbacks have achieved, and without a structure that would allow the team to in essence procure Newton's long-term rights but retain the ability to easily cut him after any given season.

There are no discussions planned and Newton, who is signed through 2015 as Carolina executed the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, has made it clear he is focused on playing football and in no hurry to negotiate a deal. In fact, sources said, with the Seahawksfacing having to re-do Russell Wilson's deal after this season, it would be quite unlikely Newton's camp would have any inclination to enter any intense negotiations at this point until ascertaining what Wilson's deal looks like (it's almost unfathomable that Wilson, an MVP candidate, would not have a new deal prior to the start of the 2015 season).

The reason it doesn't ring true for me is that is smacks of the me first prima-dona icon and entertainer bullshit that the media has been writing about this young man for the past 3 years.

You're reading too much into it. Cam wants to be paid what he's worth it, simple as that. All franchise QBs and players do.

Does anyone notice that it always just so happens these "breaking news" stories always break on gameday before a game?! Last week it was Glazer saying that Harbaugh wont return next season playoffs or no playoffs. Remember the cards game last year how a story broke that we already started to interview coaches to replace Rivera?! And now this..

The stupid ass media has cried wolf one too many times in my book, take gameday "breaking news" with a huge grain of salt.

    • In a lot of ways it makes sense to just draft a tackle early so they have flexibility with icky's injury and Motons not getting younger. I'd love for them to resign BC cause to me he looks pretty good anywhere they put him
    • Rods the one who needs to go if they don't win a cup soon, Overall I like the way Tulsky operates, do i wish he had pivoted to several smaller moves instead of going all in on a big acquisition? Obviously.   But RBA is the one I'm locked onto, he is too stuck in his ways and if if "his way" can't get somthing done he just triples down and proves his insanity by trying the same stupid crap over and over, the facebook casuals will be like but but but 8 years in a row making the playoffs.... yes we'll guess what we should have at least a cup to show for it, yes only one team wins every year but this year will be the 8th consecutive year making the playoffs.... heck none of us even get excited about that and haven't in four years minimum.  Our top guys are nearing the peak of their prime the time is now, but the canes seem content to stand pat and "make the playoffs" anther 5-8 years in a row.
    • #Panthers TE Tommy Tremble has a $2 million guarantee that is triggered today at 4 p.m. I don’t expect any movement there, fwiw. Tremble is due a $3.67 million base salary this season. He has another $2.4 million in incentives on his deal, per Over the Cap. https://x.com/mike_e_kaye/status/2032117015121391697?s=46&t=xeIgh_-Vr2aKxBkBJdfnKA
