How do you know the team didn't approach Mitchell during the season?

Because he said he was never approached nor was the offer matched by Carolina (in fairness we wouldn't have ever matched that). Gettleman at his best. That was right after he cut Smitty

this is as close as we're going to get to truth in the media from our locker room. RR/Getts will never keep it this real because they knew all along they weren't going to spend money this year. The huddle sees it as a year  to year thing, they see it as 2-3 year process keeping in mind the core is proven. It just so happened we had a decent season last year but it wasn't intentional in reference to personnel. No one can argue against that point because they wouldn't have let them walk. let this marinate:

(end of last season interview)

Gettleman: "Who would have ever thought we would have had a run like this?"

smh

We couldn't afford to keep him for sure. That being said, what he brought to Carolina was physicality, speed, and aggression. 3 things we are severely lacking right now in the secondary.

You forgot the Personal Fouls. That was the biggest thing Mitchell brought. He was a stupid football player. He'd get burnt for a 20 yard pass then puff his chest and run his mouth after tackling the guy.

Dude was trash.

If it's true that we never offered him an extension mid-season, then yes that was a missed opportunity.  Hindsight is a bitch though.

The players and the fans, that's who Dave, that's who

His thoughts on cutting Smitty "who would have ever thought so many people loved him"

He's so out if touch with reality

This is pretty interesting. Maybe they are really building for the future. Signs point to it, ala the signing of "solid" vets like Cotchery, Avant etc. No one truly expects to build a team like that. It's just that us as fans want instant results. It'll be interesting to see what this team looks like when it's done.

On the other hand, you can't hang up your season because you're building for the future. You'll breed mediocrity and a losing attitude in the locker room. It's a fine balance that a GM must find because you'll never be able to afford all your star players.

Building for the future is a fallacy almost. How many draft picks are u really going to hit on? You can't build a team exclusively via the draft. You need solid FAs as well.

We have been hitting on most of our draft picks though, I'm not even gonna pretend like we haven't. Cam/Luke/Star/KK/KB

I don't think the focus is entirely on drafting. We have made some forays into FA. That oline guy who chose TB over us though he was getting paid the same is an example. I'm sure we would have signed some FAs long term if we had the money.

He's been on record saying he would have stayed for less, never even got an offer. Why would he lie

I wouldn't mind seeing Lester get some playing time, Boston as well. Harper was a member of the saints when they had one of the worse defenses of all time. I don't think Decoud is near as bad as Harper. Lester, Boston and Decoud could probably play better than what we have now.
