Chances Riverboat Ron gets Canned ?

Not to mention not going for it in OT on 4th and short.  You play to win the game right there.  Your defense couldn't stop them in the first quarter, no way it will in OT.   The only reason it ended in a tie was dumb luck.  Rivera got lucky he missed it and everyone forgot about that stupid decision.

I also thought that was a terrible call. We deserved to lose that game after that call.  Not to mention when you're already in FG range how in the world do you complete a first down pass short of the sticks? The coach has got to let the players know you better get your ass past the first down marker.

I would have let him walk. Many were saying that playoff game last year was his last in a Panthers uniform.

Really? I remember a lot talk about signing Hardy long term. The domestic abuse wasn't an issue until after week 1. Hind site is 20 20. This place would have imploded had we let him walk

Some thought keeping Hardy would cost too much money.  I was one of the ones last year that said to let him walk, of course this was before the incident with his girlfriend.  There were plenty of guys we could have brought in to help us in the free agent market, but Hardy's tag cost us big time.  The incident just made things worst, and we know the results now.  All that aside, it was a bad move ultimately because had everything went perfect, his value would have gone up.  His price tag might have been 15 million a year, especially if he started getting sacks at the rate he was getting them near the end of last season.  With Cam's contract coming up and our current cap situation, we probably couldn't afford to sign Hardy long term anyway, and that is why franchising him for one year was a bad move. (and with all the turmoil surrounding the legal troubles that came later aside)

It is a coaching marvel that with a make shift o line, rookie #1 WR, no healthy running backs, losing Greg Hardy, no speed in secondary, and no cap space we are 3-3-1

Hell he may deserve another extension for making lemonade with this bunch of lemons

I think in order to replace a coach who has seen improvement yearly mid year (coming of a Coach of the Year award), you have to see a complete failure in the team.  We do stink right now, but I don't see a completely lost team.  I see a team that need to have the hammer laid to it like no other.  I don't see a team ready to give up.

There's still hope for the season, but I don't see a high likelihood of a replacement mid season.  Richardson is going to evaluate at the end of the year.  If we come back and keep losing, but we're fighting, playing hard, but get beat by better teams, then Rivera hasn't lost the team.

Offensively, Shula does need to play to the strengths of his squad as opposed to his philosophy.

I know people believe this because of what happened with John Fox, but they forget what happened with Dom Capers.

Dom Capers got a ten year contract extension after the 1996 season. He was fired just two years into it after the team finished 4-12 in 1998. And we didn't really have a true GM at the time so the decision was made primarily by Jerry Richardson.

Rivera's extension was only four years.

I definitely think it's possible.

You can't give Rivera the league's worst OL and secondary....and fire him with a straight face if we go 7-9. Add in on top of him hoe much cap isn't playing.

Gettlemen looks worse than Ron right now. That's all I am saying. You could fire Ron....but d your name is Dave you ain't got a case you can make.

Except Rivera believed in those guys too.  Some evidence suggests he believed more than Gettleman did.

Whether you agree or not though, it's way more likely Rivera gets canned than Gettleman.

I don't ultimately think Rivera will be fired, but if the season goes in the toilet I do think it's conceivable.

    • We keep referring to it as Over drafting him like he was really a first round draft pick. We traded up at the end of the first to get him in a deal with Buffalo so that we could grab him and get an extra year on his contract if needed. At the time that sounded like "If he really soars, we can get that fifth year extension automatically". It really probably meant, "We might need five years to really get him up to starting WR speed."  He was basically a second rounder with a potentially meaningless pick as well to pay for those rights. Still, I think that with him we are on the Kelvin Benjamin bubble right now... will he ever be more than just an athlete? Can he really learn to fight and compete for that ball? Can he learn professional routes? Can he handle the fame and more money than he's ever seen in his life? Can he handle all of the pressure a fanbase puts on him? Tough shoes to fill. Not sure I'd want to be in them. I hope he gets it all together soon. A lot, most draftees, can't. Good luck and God bless to the young man. He's got a lot of work to do in a very unforgiving workplace.
    • This is the #1 reason I defend Bryce. Everyone around him is learning on the job, including him. But hey in 3 years we could have a talented offense that grew up together.
    • Nope. No balling out but he could latch on as a backup elsewhere. I still think he would be the weak link on a ridiculously loaded team that would create problems in the Playoff and while facing other really good teams. His limitations are just to much at this level. I have zero fear of playing him in the future. It's a litmus test for the D, granted the D is pretty awful currently so none needed.
