My biggest worry about Gettleman

One of the best analysis I've read about the state of our team, and it's not even close. Well said. And anyone who insists on blaming and/or suggesting we replace Gettlemen should read this.

I don't think anyone should be fired at this point, but Gettleman does deserve some blame for some of our woes this season.  I am willing to give him three more years, and Rivera at least one more , if not two.  We had better see some general improvement though---at least on one side of the ball.

The Hardy situation has apparently really hurt, and though you can say that no one saw it coming, you can also say that everyone saw it coming (and as such maybe should have parted the ways and tried for cheaper options  when we had the chance (e.g., Chris Canty, Justin Tuck, Lamarr Woodley, or even Lamarr Houston).  It's just a thought. I realize it's Monday morning QBing.

It's only his second season.  I don't think he would hesitate if need be.  If we lost the Giants game last year I think he would have canned Rivera.  Well we didn't, and ended up overachieving at 12-4.  Started off this season 2-0.  The blowouts are hard to watch and coaching changes may need to be made but I think it's way too early in the season to make any drastic moves just for the sake of continuity.  We're still in first place in this weak division (kissing your sister).  The next few games will be very telling because first place or not we look very far from a bonafide playoff team.

Mr Scot with all due respect this thread is premature. The recent struggles are concerning but it's not like the team isn't competitive. There are some genuine concerns about how Rivera is handling the team and in particular the defense, but right now but it's too soon. After a season as positive as 2013, I wouldn't expect them to make any wholesale staff changes. If it's not broke, don't fix it.

The two things that hurt the Panthers the most were Jordan Gross retiring and Greg Hardy's legal troubles. Hardy straight up took over 3 games last year (Giants, Saints, @ Falcons). The Panthers don't win those games without Hardy. And the team clearly wasn't expecting Jordan Gross to retire. His loss has been felt the most throughout the team. The team just isn't performing up to their talent level right now and are sorely lacking talent at key positions. Some of that falls on Gettleman, but the salary cap issues are well known. The problems fall on EVERYONE. There is no one person to blame.

They expected Gross to retire, his contract was designed to allow him to walk away. Anyone not expecting him to retire clearly didnt pay attention.

Yeah, didn't we have to talk Gross into coming back in 2012 as well?

The possibility of him retiring wasn't just something spur of the moment.

Yes, it was always hard for him to Keep on the weight. He was restructured to a one year voidable deal before 2013. So, i really cant give any merit to the team not expecting him to retire.

It doesn't help that Gettleman has basically no margin for error, with so little to work with he's had to be almost perfect in the draft and hit on every dumpster dive player to fill the gaps and while the drafting has on the whole been successful, with dumpster diving it can also be a double edged sword, when you do manage to resurrect someone's career on a one year deal, they usually end up somewhere else the season after because we can't afford to match the contract (see Ted Ginn) and when you dont you end up with a crappy player (see Roman Harper)

I'd agree he's had to go cheap in some areas (thanks again Marty) and I'm pretty sure rolling with Bell at left tackle wasn't exactly his favorite idea.

But he did ultimately sign off on it.

As evidenced by the fact that we tried to sign the OT from the Bengals but couldn't compete with the $ Tampa offered.

I suspect that the reason that he hasn't cut any staff is because he knows that they are the right guys for the job. I don't think that he would have 2 standards or not do whatever he can to win. He knows that he can give them the talent they need and is trying to remain competitive while going through cap hell. He works with these guys every day and knows whether they are doing a good job or not. So if he is keeping them you can bet he thinks they are the best guys he can find right now. It doesn't mean he might not make a change down the road if he thinks he can do better just that right now they are the best for the job. Gettleman also grew up in an organization that values continuity and realizes that the best way to build success is to not make knee jerk reactions like firing a coach when the team struggles. Look at how New York has stuck with Coughlin who has had mediocre seasons sandwiched between the super bowl wins,
