Troubling comment from Rivera

Just watched his press conference, something even more troubling stuck out to me:

When asked about the play of Bell and Chandler, it was basically "well, they did the best they could."

Unfortunately, Ron, their best isn't getting it done and is probably the second biggest reason behind Shula we have now dipped under .500. This isn't peewee football. This is the National Football League. "Best they could" just shouldn't cut it at this level. Something has to be done. Bring in competition, trade for a young tackle with upside. Bring in a veteran that has declined. There has to be upgrades elsewhere that can be had at a relatively affordable price.

That's G-man's responsibility.

Apparently White is in Rivera's doghouse now officially, having not played at all in today's game.

I wish they would use our young defensive backs. At least then we would benefit by getting these guys some real game experience.

SS: Boston

FS: Lester

CB: Normon

CB: White

CB: Bene'

Would it really be a downgrade at this point?

Rivera talks to defensive players sometimes, but he doesn't seem very involved with the players on Sundays.  I'm watching the Packers/Saints game right now and you frequently see Sean Payton making calls, talking to Brees, heavily involved in the gameplan for the offense.  McCarthy is the same on the other side, actively involved in the gameplan.  Rivera is a defensive coach, granted, but you don't see that kind of involvement from him on either side of the ball during the game.

So I'm not surprised he had no idea why Greg Olsen wasn't more involved.  He seems pretty removed from it all during the game.

That's because he so busy, has to spend some much time trying to learn to be a HC, he can't have the distractions.

Would have much rather rolled the dice with that group as opposed to dishing out two-year contracts to Harper and DeCoud. Maybe then we could have used that cash on top of our offer and actually secured Anthony Collins in free agency.

I would say bringing in competent players is more on Gettleman than Rivera. If you read between the lines that could even be a shot at Gettleman saying "Get us some fugging help."

I guess I'd just hope Rivera wouldn't have to use press conferences in front of cameras and the media to pitch to Gettleman that we need help at tackle. The lack of productively at the tackle position could be seen coming from a mile away before this season even started. In pre-season they were terrible and they are terrible now. I'd hope Rivera could walk into his office and sit down face-to-face and tell Gettleman what we have currently at tackle is not sufficient.

Agreed but the thing that is the most troubling to me, is that we have the same needs that we had last off-season and it is apparent already. I thought for sure we would doing everything we could to surround Cam with talent and protection by way of the draft and free agency. Instead, we drafted and equal amount of defenders to offensive players and used our free agency period on the secondary that hasn't performed well either. Sure, we brought in Avant and Cotchery, but I would have passed on those contracts to couple that money with other funds to bring in a competent tackle. Losing Gross was still the biggest blow to this team. I bet Gettleman regrets not taking a crack at an OT in the draft after witnessing the product on the field right now.

This past draft class couldn't have been better for us to address our need of offensive weapons for Cam. We got 1! O-N-E!

Donte Moncrief went off today, Allen Robinson had another solid day again. We keep saying "this offseason we'll do it" well we've said that too many times and nothing has seemed to change.

Don't forget we drafted Gaffney! You know another late round RB to add to our collection.

You don't have to tell me twice. This past draft was a match made in heaven for a team deprived of offensive talent. Fortunately, the next draft is loaded across the board on both sides of the ball as well. Problem is, every team gets better after the draft. Would have loved to double dip at WR after Benji in the first.

I understand that players and coaches can rub each other the wrong way but I find it f*cking weird that White is still in Rivera's doghouse when we're sending DeCoud, Cason, and Harper repeatedly out there like they don't constantly f*ck up.

    • Hello, soccer fans [crickets, tumbleweed flies by]. The World Cup kicks off in less than 2 weeks and, well, 🇺🇸USA USA USA🇺🇸 and all. We beat Senegal 3-2 yesterday in a tune-up friendly at BoA, with Christian Pulisic finally entering the scoring column.  How will we do in the World Cup once our tournament kicks off on the 12th? Well, there are 48 teams (assuming Iran is there) and it feels like one of two thing happens: we get grouped for the first time since '98, or we make it to the Round of 16 for the third time in the last four World Cups. I tried out the lottery for an Atlanta game and struck out, so yesterday was as World Cup as I'll get for in-person ($285/ticket for like Norway vs $39/ticket for USMNT right beforehand was a layup).  The U.S. has a travel-heavy schedule in group play, playing in LA, Seattle and LA. Real road warrior mentality being built. Glad the east coast gets worse kickoff times for a NA World Cup than a Qatar World Cup.
    • Well, that's the thing. Drafting players only for their physical measurables as you are suggesting only really happened during 2024, and X unfortunately has become the poster child for that. To be clear, it's not necessarily about drafting RAS over skill, but RAS over NFL-readiness and/or a solid body of work. Lots of players show skill in college, but those skills don't necessarily translate to the NFL for a multitude of reasons. But, getting back to the main point, to be clear, I believe that our FO is still enamored with physical gifts (who wouldn't be?), but now they're letting Dr. Eric Eager's proprietary system--his "secret sauce" prioritize the players that the Panthers draft, and it seems like it weighs not only a solid body of work, relative to a college career of course, but consistent gradual improvement as evidenced by production pretty highly.
    • Its a good article about how pathetically bad our past drafts ('23 and '24) have been. Building the team in '23 since we weren't ready yet and taking your qb in '24 made so much more sense in hindsight. Ladd McConkey over XL is pretty much a given but not sure it does as much to change Bryce's trajectory as the author suggests.  As bad as '23 and '24 drafts were, the '25 and '26 really give me hope.
