Panthers officials insist Cam Newton's MNF problems totally mental

This is on Yahoo this morning...

NBC Sports football analyst Ross Tucker, however, received assurances from Panthers' officials that the 25-year-old signal-caller was totally healthy. In a discussion with ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio, Tucker said some trusted people in the organization think Newton's sluggish behavior against the Eagles was mental.

"They insisted to me that there was nothing wrong with him physically," Tucker said. "His lethargic, nonchalant mannerisms and body language last night, that's just him. That's just how he acts at times."

The curious behavior, Tucker says, can be chalked up to Newton's volatile attitude.

"I even had one guy tell me 'When things are really going well, he is so high, so upbeat, so much energy and he's going to make a lot of plays for you. But when things start to go poorly and start to roll the other way, he really struggles at times mentally coming back from that.' No matter how you slice it, that's really concerning, considering the money he wants."

That's about half the article and there is a video...

Interesting... I'm wondering if Zod or Voth have heard anything along these lines... it's the first I've heard of it.

To say I'm skeptical would be an understatement.  Was Cam "down" Monday night?  No doubt... was he simply pouting?  I don't think so.

To be honest, I can't blame him if part of it IS his mannerisms. I'd be like that if I was out there getting drilled every play.

Do I think there is anything to this? Maybe partially. But to me, it seems like he's pretty banged up physically. He should have been pulled at halftime on Monday, if nothing else but to prevent him from getting injured.

Basically, the Panthers organization is Cam Newton's parents right now, and they are encouraging him to go play in traffic.

I think Cam's health is obvious to anyone who actually watches the games.

I don't think throwing him under the bus is going to do anyone any favors, including the coaching staff.

This team sucks from top to bottom. The offense is terrible in all phases. I don't blame Cam for being sick and tired of this sh&t storm. How can ANYONE succeed with this group.

Yep.

2nd play of the game your loser running back fumbles the ball. Then your WR stops running his route, all this in the first 5 minutes. This team and organization has let him down his entire career.

Cam isn't an idiot, he knows he's a sitting duck back there and that this team blows. Mentally, he checked out in the 1st quarter and I don't blame him.

from the article

So it was very reasonable to think that Newton, who grimaced and limped out of the huddle Monday night and only managed two rushing attempts, had aggravated his foot injury or even suffered a new one.

I must have missed it but I have heard nothing about a foot injury ?

The FO of this organization is completely dilusional and clearly in a state of flux...just like the rest of the team smh. I feel very sorry for Cam because not only is he an athlete he is a great young man. I live here in ATL and I can tell first hand you that he tries to reach as many youth and people in need as possible. To say he is essentially a head case and his attitude is predicated by his level of success is both ignorant and malicious. I would probably be acting different to if it felt like I wasn't valued or wanted. Look no further then the lack of resources around Cam.

This season just keeps getting worse, and it's time for some major changes. The Rivera era should officially be over after this season. And i'm about 97% sure Gettleman's ass needs to be gone with him.

If one were inclined to believe that the organization was hanging Cam out to dry and tanking the season as part of a elaborate conspiracy to drive down Cam's market value to make him more affordable to resign, not saying that's the case, but just suggesting it as a possibility, would this report that said player is mopey and too weak-willed to be a franchise QB not be exactly the kind of news "leaked" from an organization with such intentions?

[/tinfoil hat theory]

This strategy wouldn't work. Why would he want to play for someone that does that to him? plenty of teams will offer him huge money regardless of what this team says about him 10 weeks into a destroyed season when it's obvious how little ability the fo had to give him help

And to think this time last year we were coming off that 10-9 win against the 49ers. How things change....

    • I guess I should have stipulated outside the sacred cow.   I complained from year one that Bryce should compete for and win the starting job on his own merit but no he was just handed it. I have been right there with everyone that wants competition.  But I don’t really have a huge problem with it for this season the way it has gone because where are the viable people we don’t have to trade for? I actually am okay with tiny hands Pickett because he is so close to Bryce arm strength wise and to be honest, skill wise. Probably. And it is only a one year deal.  That also takes I to account that the QB class is looking stacked next year and if Young fails miserably then we get either a reset or a real competition and there will be more guys that I would like looking at in the FA QB class next year as well.    I sort of accept where we are this year and look at it as a treading water year. I just want to get to next year with some clarity. More than anything. And they did empty out the room. Again, who was really there for us?  And I know it would not be a true competition at this point anyway. They are giving him the year, like it or not.    Also I don’t give a poo about winning games IF he sucks and or goes down after sucking because draft position and that stacked QB class.  And I want out from under him So Bad.     So I guess it is several factors that lessen my anxiety over his backup this particular season.    I am not trying to convince anyone, but you asked.
    • What happened to King? Was he a no show?
    • think these smaller Qb's are going to have a much harder time convincing an NFL team to draft them. not saying a smaller Qb under 6 feet tall will not make an NFL roster .it will most likely be a UDFA contract more or less prove it deal.NFL teams have been burnt time & time again investing in these small NFL Qbs & i think  teams are now finally starting to realize that investing in these smaller Qb's under 6 feet tall is simply a bad idea  ...just saying
