Steve Logan absolutely nails it about Cam Newton and Panthers

Those who aren't familiar with Steve Logan, he is a long time football coach, an offensive guru, and a QB specialist.  Was head coach at ECU from 1992-2002.

 

As a college coach he helped put David Garrard, Jeff Blake, and Matt Ryan in the NFL among others.  He had coached for 40 years at every level.  He now has an awesome weekly radio show here in Raleigh and now an awesome weekly TV show here in Raleigh.

 

He is a funny guy and a smart guy so he is always a great listen.  I am sure most of you guys are familiar with him, but wanted to give some of his resume in case you have never heard of him.  Bottom line is he is a guy that I respect a lot and enjoy listening to.

 

He had an interview David Glenn yesterday and they talked about Cam Newton (maybe some of you have heard it).  And to me, he hits the nail on the head in both his evaluation of Cam Newton and what is going on around him.  He articulates in 3 minutes what I bumble out in the course of 5 wall of text posts in a thread and probably only make sense in my head :D.  I couldn't agree with him more on everything he says.

He has a way of saying something insightful in a way anyone can understand.  For example, my favorite quote from this interview about the game on Monday night.

 

 

There were 3 snaps on film where he would have had to call a fair catch in the shotgun to keep from getting sacked.  That's how fast those guys got back there!

I'm glad he touched on Cam's intelligence and says he knows what's going on. Cam typically makes good decisions and rarely do you see him throw a ball into a crowd. This year it's becoming tougher since all his WR's can't get any separation.

In a way I'm kind of glad this all happened on Monday Night Football so the world could see. Maybe all this talk and bashing of the Panthers FO will give them the nudge they need to make some changes.

Yep. He talked about his accuracy, but said he was a smart player and knew what was going on and was a 1010 in mobility so you can live with the accuracy. Basically says you have to mold offense around what QBs do well, and by that I took it to imply our coaching staff is not doing that

Steve Logan is pretty cool gentleman. Very polite and down to earth, ran into him at G K Cafe in G-Vegas. Always good to listen to on the radio.

Like I said I would be all for it. He knows QB play and offense about as well as anybody.

 

Yeah I wonder what he would say if the Panthers offered him a job at the end of the season. From that comment it makes me think he may consider giving that up temporarily to coach Cam. Of course with our FO's incompetence, they wouldn't consider him.

      This was the first time I’ve seen him play. Very impressive guy. Does he play well within structure as well? You can’t live on out of structure play in the NFL.

      But they exist in that space precisely because they were the outliers with big arms and other elite traits(especially athletically). I would never look past a sub 6 foot QB with a similar profile to those guys. That's basically what I mean. My list of prospects is never going to auto delete based on stature. It's definitely a reason to take a more in depth look to make sure they are going to translate. Bryce fooled me with his playmaking ability. I thought it was going to translate well, ignored all his throwing mechanics issues and gave more credit to his abilities than the superstar team around him. I am not going to do that again.

      I agree but the 1 and a half guys that have fit is a small hit percentage. I agree the other stuff matters more. If Murray wasn't a dud between the ears it would be 2 and not 1 in that category. It's deffinatly not as high as ability, tools and skills.  Yeah really weak arm is a huge red flag. Paired with poor footwork should be a hell no.
