Smart kid (graduated after his junior year).

True breakaway speed.  He will run a true 4.4 at the combine (if invited) and could possibly break under that (which he has as timed at Auburn).

He's physical freak.  Great arm-span.  Can jump through the roof.

Now the bad news.

Questionable hands.  Has dropped plenty of easy throws in his college career.  Lets the ball get to his shoulder pads too often instead of catching it with his hands.  Not the most talented at adjusting to the long ball in the air if the throw isn't near perfect.

I'm not comparing him to Julio Jones because we already know what Julio Jones can do in the NFL, but Jones had many of the same questions coming out of college.

Is Coates worth a 1st round pick IMO?  No.

A high 2nd?  No.

A mid to low 2nd?  I think that would be decent value.

A 3rd?  GREAT value.

I do think that he's worth a late first or high second round pick. He can take the top off the defence and I think that he'll run a 4.3.

He's a lot like Torrey Smith, but I think that he can be better. He drops the ball, but I think that he would drop less with more passes thrown his way.

If we get into the playoffs, and have a late first, and there's no LT or Safety, I would take him because this team needs speed at WR. If we have a WR like Coates, a safety needs to stay close, and they can't double KB or Olsen. We can have a shifty Philly Brown in the slot. We could be set for years.

2nd round to me. his hands are inconsistent at times, but he does win getting vertical up the field.he makes up for the easy drops, by catching the very difficult passes. he will run 4.4 or sub 4.4 at the combine, and is listed ay 6'2 210. body is rocked up. the panthers need someone who can win vertically up the field, and has some RAC ability. not many WRs can do this.

He's worth a 2nd round pick.  I didn't really see what I expected to see out of him this year, but I imagine if he played with a better offensive system with a legit QB, he would have had better numbers.

Not here to defend him (like I said he has questionable hands), but he played with a banged-up knee for most of the year.  Missed the entire first game, if memory serves.  He only finally got fully healthy toward the end of the year.  He also lost touches because his teammate lined up on the other side of the field, Duke Williams, got more targets than he did (and deservedly so, Williams has great hands and runs great patterns and can also be physical).

If you want a WR that can take the top off of a defense, that's Coates. Pretty sure Sammie averaged better than 20 yds per catch over his last 2 years. He compared to me like a Torrey Smith in the NFL.

If you want an Anquan Bolden clone, thats Williams, though I think Duke can run close to a 4.5 and I don't think Bolden was ever that fast. Maybe Williams is better compared to someone like Jordy Nelson.
