Norman should be our Sherman

Norman is a AC Cobra with a 427 ci engine in it.....fast, exciting and sometimes out of control. His drive will Wow you at times but if you are not careful end up in a ditch overturned and thrown from the drivers seat.

Sherman is a Lamborghini...........fast, precise and in control......everything the Cobra can give you but in calculated strategic style....

You realize Sherman went to Stanford and is extremely intelligent? Everything he says, for the most part, is calculated and precise. Meanwhile, Josh Norman says "speculize" TWICE. I love Norman, but he's not quite on Sherman's level on or off the field.

Perhaps he received a scholarship to Stanford for football. It doesn't necessarily make him intelligent in every area even if he got in on testing alone.

Yea scheme makes him top itch because he can lock his side down. But I wonder why Norman doesn't follow his man into the slots?

The short answer:

I think we don't do it because we don't want to tip man or zone.  I think Collin Jones makes us confident enough that we can still play man on the inside.  This is what was killing us early in the year once teams found out that 1. Godfrey isn't a CB.   2. You could effectively take Kuechly and Davis out of the middle in 3 wr sets by releasing the back.

The longer answer because I have nothing to do at work:

In zone we usually play off the ball , but against Atlanta we played zone even when making it look like press man.  Our defense hid everything.  We did a lot of  redirects (jamming WR) pushing them inside on zone blitzes/ cover 3, and outside on cover 2/hybrid thing we do. We were even running press man while showing A gap pressure with TD and Kuechly (which we usually never do).   I rewatch the games a lot (way more on wins) and even though the Defenses were the same, the looks were different.

Teams bread an butter against our CB play was the 7 routes (take your pick which one). Not only this year but last year as well.  That's why teams used to get large numbers yardage wise but we tightened down in the redzone.  This year you could run digs and comebacks on White and Cason at will.  You could run anything on Godfrey.   Now?  Normans press is straight out disruptive (he is using all 5 yards), he excels in it.  Bene's press is adequate but his anticipation is great.  Both CB's ability/quickness/speed to jump those shorter routes is what is leading to the resurgence in our Dline.  There are no more gimme routes.  All the usual routes that you could complete on us have been taken away. That's why Brees and Ryan struggled so much against us. To negate a good Dline you have to go to short passes, quick drops, etc.  We don't even give you that anymore.   Now you have to wait for those routes that are 12-17 yards to open up.  By that time CJ and the rest of the line is dancing on your kidneys.   Top it off.. Dwan and KK have been eating up the running lanes and Ealy and Addison have stiffened.  Guards that are bumping and releasing to try and get on our LB's and our DT's are shutting that down.

Exactly.

He didn't go to Stanford because he's the top student in his class. The only reason is he plays football and he's good at it.

We all know how athletes get a good GPA lol

Yeah at uncheat in African American studies. Communication isn't the hardest degree but it is a legit one and at Stanford no less. Not saying he's a brain surgeon but he definitely knows how to market himself.

    • That's my biggest concern with making him the 2C.  You split up the Aho Jarvis bromance that accounted for a lot of points.  If Jarvis excels as a C, it could help the team even more though.
    • The Saints being that high is the one that killed me. Chris Olave might not know his name at this point, Shaheed is coming off injury as well, so 31 year old Brandin Cooks might be your best WR...coming off a 260 yard season over 10 games. Kamara is Kamara, but didn't have 1,000 yards last year and is about to turn 30.  Toss in the fact that Taysom Hill may be the best QB on the team and I truly don't understand Barnwell's thoughts beside seeing the names "Olave" and "Kamara" and going yep, that sounds better than "Chuba" and "Thielen".
    • Now now now, I wouldn't say there is no logic, but there's just not a lot of in-depth thought put into Barnwell's  "analysis." Now to be fair to him (and other national writers), pre-season team rankings are basically clickbait. And...Barnwell, himself, said that "there's a lot of projection here." He basically admits that he doesn't know how the hell things are going to turn out with our receiver group. He also said that "I find myself" more intrigued by Coker than Legette; that does not mean that he said that fans should be, or that Coker will even be better than Legette (regardless of ESPN's per-route-run stat). So, yeah, Barnwell said some things, but even he has to basically admit that he doesn't know how bad or good that our playmakers will be in 2025.  Overall, what Barnwell is basically thinking is that the Panthers have gotten worse at the offensive skill positions, and baked into that is that others have gotten better. That's the argument in July (meaning, please don't give this any more weight than it's due). I would personally be surprised (not shocked) if we end up worse than the Titans, Pats and Giants at least. Once you throw in the Bills, Giants, Jets, Steelers, and even the Chargers, I personally think there are several teams' skill groups that may end up ranked lower than ours by the end of 2025.  @kungfoodudeis one of my dudes, but like others he is over the tipping point. He's had enough. Seeing is believing. I will say this though: Barnwell's piece is less about logic than just good ol' opinion. And to be honest, he might as well be a Huddler throwing out sh¡t in the summer based upon nothing but good feels or bad feels.  Our offense as a whole (just like any other team's) is going to depend upon the play of the O-line and especially the QB. How you can even rank the skill positions without expressly baking those two things in the cake is beyond me. I would dare say that that's not even logical.
