Steve Logan's points on the Panthers game past weekend and future. Radio interview today on 99.9 in Raleigh. Paraphrased as best I could

1. Could not believe benjamin was not thrown to more

2. Point one was made in relation to Bersin failing on his route...why was Bersin the target there

3. Said one of the differences in championship teams is they had a punt and kick returners. Could not believe the Panthers did not address this in the offseason

4. Felt the Panthers were in decent shape for next year but tweaking was required including finding a decent returner. Discussion jokingly about Ginns one year contract being up and resigning him

5. Interestingly said the reason the Pamthers run the zone read so much has more to do with OL blocking deficiencies than Newton. Easier to hide those deficiencies in that scheme

6. Draft. No surprises. Same as most say on here

7. Asked what Cam should do in the offseason maybe trying what Kap is doing working with Werner and Logan said it couldn't hurt to work on 7 on 7s

8. Asked if Newton was worth the signing to long term. Unequivocally he said yes. Said in final QBR which his words just one metric of many, Newton ranked 14 out of 32 of the starting QBs

Again interesting to hear from someone who knows the Panthers and has been a coach

I wonder what the details are though because if I recall there were some rumors they might actually cut him during the preseason

I dunno. The news section of Google doesn't show any recent articles questioning his future.

Love Steve Logan... smart dude. I remember being a big fan of his as a kid when he was ECU's head coach.

Just wanted to say this though... if cam currently ranks 14th in qbr, and we know for a fact he is physically more talented than any other qb in the league, imagine what he could do and where he would be in that respect, if he had an nfl-caliber line and receiving corps. If we get him some weapons, especially ones that don't struggle to get separation across the board, he is going to blow people's minds.

    • I'd hold on to Walker - we have no OT depth at all. Freeling is a block of clay - all the tools are there and he appears to have a great attitude. He needs serious work on his technique to realise his potential though.
    • From my watch last night: They weren't trading out of 19 unless it was a daft offer once Freeling got there. They were clearly antsy to get Hunter - and Minnesota actually called to offer the trade down. They weren't trading out of the third round pick once Brazzell fell to it (and Canales would have been happy with him in the second round). They traded back a lot on Day 3 - even if Morgan 'Babe Ruth'd' it with Lee, Hecht and Wheatley; they clearly weren't the only guys they would have taken at those picks. I'm curious to know which player caused the reaction at the start of day 2 (Dan Morgan): "of course they'd pick him"
    • Watching this confirms that this staff and front office is super high on Monroe Freeling. I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotta a real chance to win the starting LT job in camp. If he does, we can look to flip Rasheed Walker to a contender desperate for tackle help.   As for Ickey I still really like him and wanna extend him but based on how the staff was talking about Freeling it might be time for ickey to start taking some practice sets at guard if he wants to stay here as we are gonna have to have figure out a solution for the contracts of Lewis and Hunt.  My preferred scenario for the Oline in 2027 is Freeling-Ickey-Hech-Lewis-Moton.
