Any word on the Duran Carter visit?

Colts had a fair number of injuries at receiver though, and yet even with that he didn't earn more playing time.

Not saying they were equivalent, mind you, but prior to the season people were on here screaming as if passing on Nicks was going to be the biggest mistake this franchise ever made, Gettleman had lost it, blah blah blah. And the reality is his season wasn't anything all that special.

Is he better that bersin or cotchery yes or no?

2014 Stats:

Hakeem Nicks - 38 receptions, 405 yards, Average - 10.7, Longest - 29, 4 TDs

Jerricho Cotchery - 48 receptions, 580 yards, Average - 12.1, Longest - 47, 1 TD

Boy, we sure blew it passing on Hakeem Nicks, huh?

Just another good example of Dave Gettleman being a GM that knows which players we need to sign and the ones to lay off off.

Call up the Colts GM and ask him if he feels he got what he paid for. I'm sure Gettleman would have loved to have Nicks, but not for what he was going to have to pay. Paid Cotch, got pretty much the same production (no matter the number of snaps). If you recall, when we dumped all our WRs, Rivera said in a press conference that they only needed to replace 10 catches per game.

Well he did put up those numbers as the #4/5 while Cotch only got that much as the #2. I think Nicks could've helped us win games this year, but Cotch was a more important signing for developing young guys for the future.

let's be real, Cotch was #3 in passing order behind KB and Greg. Hell #4 by the time Philly emerged

Donte Moncrief is a rookie picked in the third round, Dwayne Allen is a second string tight end and Reggie Wayne is 36 years old and has lost a step.

You're gonna blame those guys for Hakeem Nicks not having better stats?

But if we'd have signed him, he'd have set the League on fire, right?

That is minimizing each of them.

Okay, so would you rather have Wayne or Cotchery? Hilton or Cotchery? Hell, what about Hilton or Wayne over Benjamin for one season (2014)?

The point is, their receiving corps is better and fsr more talented than ours, and thus, Nicks was not a featured part of their offense. Sure, he should have done more than what he did. Coming in with them, he could've been as high as their #1 and probably shouldve been no lower than a #2. But, I'm not gonna destroy the guy for losing out to Hilton and a future hall of famer, even if he is 36, lol. Wayne's game wasn't based on speed, so him losing a step doesn't hurt him much...

The point is, Nicks was better than anything we had on the field at reciever, talent-wise. No one is saying he would be the best reciever in the NFL here, but he certainly is better than what we had in 2014, and at the very least wouldve made us better. That's all I'm saying.

From what I've seen Nicks gets more separation than Cotchery. I think in this offense he would have done better than he did in Indy. He wasn't really seeing that much action. Hilton and wayne are the boys up there.

They might let him go now that they've got Moncrief.

Reggie Wayne is still premier compared to most receivers. And his rapport with Luck is one the best in the league.

Nicks' one year contract with the Colts paid him 3.5 million.

3.5 million.

That means he made more in salary this season than Thomas Davis did.  Among our receivers, you'd need Kelvin Benjamin, Jerricho Cotchery and Philly Brown combined to make that number.

Nicks was a first round pick (#29 overall) with five years experience and, by his own words, this deal with the Colts was supposed to be a 'prove it' deal to show that he was worth a big contract.

But by your own argument, he couldn't earn playing time over a 3rd round rookie, a backup tight end and a 36 year old guy whose body is starting to break down.  His 'prove it' year ends with him as a #4 receiver and a 5th or 6th receiving option when you factor in the tight ends.

Do those stats and that situation say 'point proven' to you?

Would I take Hakeem Nicks?  Let me rephrase the question back to you.

Would you pay that salary for that production?

    • Interestingly I think we have kind of of gone through this as an organization. Richardson implemented an FO driven tank. Bad roster, no cash spent, coach uninterested. It may have been for different reasons but I think the results were the same. A team that wasn't going to win many if any games. We ended up with the #1 pick. Cam Newton came in and changed the franchise. It worked, but Cam himself pointed to the losing culture in the locker room needing to be changed. It probably took about 2-3 years for that to happen. Tank worked pretty damn well for us. Cam is one of one. Not another like him, everyone can't deliver on his draft status AND change a culture basically on his own.  So as an exercise here are the last 30 #1 picks. If you tanked and got to pick #1 how many of these guys do you think were worth it? Not just good players, but franchise changers. Guys who will take your culture and shift it so the tank was actually worth it. I would say maybe 9 or 10 guys would be worth a tank, pending the last 5 picks?    2025: Cam Ward (Miami (FL)) - Tennessee Titans 2024: Caleb Williams (USC) – Chicago Bears 2023: Bryce Young (Alabama) – Carolina Panthers 2022: Travon Walker (Georgia) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2021: Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) – Jacksonville Jaguars 2020: Joe Burrow (LSU) – Cincinnati Bengals 2019: Kyler Murray (Oklahoma) – Arizona Cardinals 2018: Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma) – Cleveland Browns 2017: Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) – Cleveland Browns 2016: Jared Goff (California) – Los Angeles Rams 2015: Jameis Winston (Florida State) – Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2014: Jadeveon Clowney (South Carolina) – Houston Texans 2013: Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) – Kansas City Chiefs 2012: Andrew Luck (Stanford) – Indianapolis Colts 2011: Cam Newton (Auburn) – Carolina Panthers 2010: Sam Bradford (Oklahoma) – St. Louis Rams 2009: Matthew Stafford (Georgia) – Detroit Lions 2008: Jake Long (Michigan) – Miami Dolphins 2007: JaMarcus Russell (LSU) – Oakland Raiders 2006: Mario Williams (North Carolina State) – Houston Texans 2005: Alex Smith (Utah) – San Francisco 49ers 2004: Eli Manning (Mississippi) – San Diego Chargers 2003: Carson Palmer (USC) – Cincinnati Bengals 2002: David Carr (Fresno State) – Houston Texans 2001: Michael Vick (Virginia Tech) – Atlanta Falcons 2000: Courtney Brown (Penn State) – Cleveland Browns 1999: Tim Couch (Kentucky) – Cleveland Browns 1998: Peyton Manning (Tennessee) – Indianapolis Colts 1997: Orlando Pace (Ohio State) – St. Louis Rams 1996: Keyshawn Johnson (USC) – New York Jets 1995: Ki-Jana Carter (Penn State) – Cincinnati Bengals
