DWill's 2008 season is a fuging MVP season.

The fact it isn't considered one of the best rushing seasons ever just astounds me. Take a look at the top 25 backs that season. DeAngelo had the most rushing touchdowns in the league, , had the second-highest YPC in the league (behind only Derrick Ward, whose stats were heavily skewed by their game against us), and was the only runner in the top 25 to not fumble a single time the whole season (only five running backs in the top 50 didn't fumble once)... and this is all while splitting carries with Jonathan Stewart, who himself had 184 carries, 836 yards, and ten touchdowns. Take Stewart out of the picture and DeAngelo Williams might have broken the single-season rushing record AND gotten over 25 TDs

How the actual fug do you have DeShaun Foster higher than DeAngelo Williams. Like, seriously, DeShaun Foster had about three times as many fumbles as touchdowns.

Well, not on production obviously. DeShaun was a pretty cool guy that I took a liking to when he got drafted. I pulled hard for him while he was here, but am not saying he is a better on-field RB than D-Will. That was a personal list and I think I noted that...

This really isn't a question.

DWill

JStew

Davis

In that order.

I think you people are looking through rose colored glasses on the whole J-Stew angle. I realize that he ended the season well. It's important to note, however, that he's entering his 8th year, he's NEVER played a full season as the primary starter, he's played in 16 games in 3 of his 7 seasons(all of which, D-Wills also played the entire season with over 200 carries or close to it), and his ankles are held together with rubber bands and balsa wood.

This is a lose-lose post for me. I'm either wrong, or worse, right.

In terms of straight talent:

1. Deangelo Williams

2.Jonathan Stewart

2B.Deshaun Foster

3.Tim Biakabatuka (I only saw him when I was a little boy but he was my favorite player)

4. Stephen Davis

I will say I am a Deshaun Foster homer but only because I see what could have been with the guy. Don't forget he tore his ACL his rookie year and came back to make somewhat of a career for himself in a time when an ACL was still a death sentence. We likely never saw Foster run at his 100% potential.

In terms of production

1. Deangelo Williams

2. Jonathan Stewart

3. Stephen Davis

4. Hoover

5. Foster

6. Goings

If Deangelo had an earlier start to his career I think he would be much more respected around here. He was drafted at 23 or 24 and really didn't get his shot until a few seasons after that. If Jon Fox wasn't a moron he would have started him from day 1. Aside from McCoy, Williams is the closest thing anybody has seen to Barry Sanders in a while.( In terms of his moves)

Stewart is a damn monster himself and he could very well be the franchise leader if he can stay healthy.

Don't get me wrong with Stephen Davis now. I loved the guy but we caught him at the end of his career. Great blend of speed, power, and vision but I still don't think he had the raw physical talent that Stewart and Deangelo have/had.

Fans think that good running backs are a dime a dozen.

If that was true, every team in the league would have talented RBs and their ofenses would be that much harder to stop.

I think a lot of Panther fans have gotten spoiled by having two of the best franchise backs on the roster for so long. So long, that they get dogged when they don't have the great seasons that we as Panther fans have honestly, come to expect.

I have not forgotten the ages the team has struggled finding good backs.

I hope that we never have to go through such ineptitude again.

want to find dime a dozen talented RBs? Just find a team with a good OL. RBs are largely a dime a dozen if they have blocking......what is RARE is a RB who doesn't need blocking up front.

Stephen Davis carried the Panthers on his back thru the 2003 season. No Panther player has carried the team like he did until Cam in 2013.

Stephen Davis was likely the most immediately impactful FA signing the Panthers have ever had.

January 3, 2004 Wildcard weekend in Charlotte. 29-10 Panther victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Stephen Davis 26 carries for 104yds and 1 TD.

January 10, 2004 Divisional weekend in St. Louis. 29-23 victory over the Rams. Stephen Davis gets injured with 6 carries and 86 yards, including the 64 yard carry down the left sideline when he pulled up lame.

January 18, 2004 NFCCG in Philadelphia, Davis had 19 carries, 76 yds and a 21 yd pass reception.... on one leg. Although DeShaun Foster got all the notoriety in that game for what is, quite simply, the hardest run of his entire career and the most important TD run in Panther history.

Oh yeah, and you forgot Fred Lane. You might want to check his numbers out in 1997-1999 and just consider what could have been had he ever played a full season and started more than a handful of games.

1997: Played in 13 games, started 7. 182 carries, 809 yards, 7 TDs

1998: Played in 14 games, started 11, 205 carries, 717 yards, 5 TDs

1999: Played in 15 games, started 5, 115 carries, 475 yards, 1 TD. This was the season Biakabatuka was named the starter over Lane because it was almost the healthiest Tim ever was.

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
