Deangelo Still a Panther?

I saw the same thing last night. Espn says dwill was released, another article said no.

Is there an official NFL transactions transcript or record that's public info somewhere?

He will be released officially on 3/10 so they can designate him a June 1st cut.  But clearly because he a such a veteran, they told him beforehand so he would not be blindsided.

They told him last Monday as more of a heads up and professional courtesy. They cannot designate him until 3/10.

Likely, If they publicly say he is released now it would cost the franchise some money.

Bingo! And it was the correct move and respectful! yet like 89 he's going to cry about it! smh rbs don't last long so realistically he should go hunting and be happy knowing that another team will likely pick him up... maybe ATL.

I understand why we want to make him a June 1 cut, but why is it called a June 1 cut if it happens in March?

My understanding is that you can designate a player a post June 1 cut prior to June 1st but after the start of the new league year (March 10) so that you do not have to pay roster bonuses or other incentives that would have to be paid out if the player actually remained on the roster between the start of the league year and June 1. However, you still keep the cap charge of the designated player so you can't designate someone a post June cut and then gain their cap space to use in the upcoming free agency period.

June 1st cuts have been around for awhile, but Early June 1st cuts are relatively new. Teams would have the option of cutting someone early to make room immediately, or wait until later and save more cap room come June. However, during that 3-month period most of the big FA will have found a home, so there's a tradeoff.

During the lockout it was arranged to allow teams 2 Early June 1st cuts each season. This gives the player more time to find a new team and allows the team to avoid any additional payments (like roster and workout bonuses) for players who aren't in the team's plans.

However, it should be noted that the additional cap space doesn't come immediately. Should Williams indeed be an Early June 1 cut, and it appears he will be, we will not receive the cap relief until June 1.

It basically comes down to cutting him outright for $267k in savings March 10th, or designating him as an Early June 1st player and save $2.6m this year - but not until June - with the remainder amortized to next season.

Great points about the savings not happening until after June 1st and the fact teams are limited to only 2 designations a year.

Another misconception that I often see is that the dead money is not split evenly between the 2 years.  The current year's dead money is realized in that year and then all of the remaining years of dead money accelerate in the following year.

He also pays for all the rookie contracts with his 2million.

So, all these other players being released, are they also just not official or is Deangelo's contract different?

for the most part the other releases are official because the teams releasing them are not trying to spread the cap hit into next season, which being a June 1 cut does.

the irony here is that the Panthers are doing DWill and his agent a favor but letting him know they plan to make him a June 1 cut.  They don't have to do that.  Lots of teams (pats, cough, pats) would hold their cards until later and screw their veterans just so competitors don't know all the holes they need to fill in FA and draft.

It has also been reported that the Panthers also have to work out an injury settlement with DWill before it is official.  But I thought he was active for our last game?  not sure about the rules there.

    • That's going to account for about a baker's dozen nationwide. He isn't bringing Taylor Swift numbers nor, sadly, are those shows bringing many female viewers in general. Substantially less than regular games will. I am not pining for any sort of publicity that isn't from the field, good or bad. Tepper has definitely cured me of any of those notions.
    • I think we are very far away from that, unfortunately. I also think our roster is far worse than most realize. It's largely unproven or underperforming young players or veteran journeymen. Our core is the smallest it has been in probably 15 or more years. The truth is, our talent pool has been shrinking rapidly since Ron left. This is the result of Gettleman's poor drafting in his latter years, Hurney's poor overall drafting and then the absolutely disasterous Rhule/Fitterer era. All the while, the deep talent pool we had was either retiring or leaving.  I mean, what drafted talent do we have that would even start on a third of the NFL teams? Just basically Brown and Moton. Horn really doesn't count because, well....he is never healthy enough to start anyway.  That's fuging terrible. If not the worst in the NFL, very close to it.
