Dex's OMG no OT in the first 5 rounds mock draft.

Honestly the only safety I like in the first three rounds is Collins. I'll have to take a closer look at Sample. Feel like he could be had in the 3rd instead of the 2nd and that'd still be a reach. And I would be upset with Devin Smith in the 1st. Only wideouts I'd be fine with in the first are the top 4 and Agholor.

Honestly if I had swapped Duke Johnson and Sample there might have been less rage. Still two excellent pickups.

So what would be the ideal starters at the safety position for you if we picked him up?

I don't know much about Coleman the F/A we picked up but if Sample moved to FS then Harper/Boston splitting time at SS depending on running/passing downs. I just don't see Boston at FS.

I appreciate the fact you took time to put this together...however, I am not digging the Steve Nelson pick.  In the highlight vid there were 6 or 7 catches that an NFL WR would have caught and 5 of those would have been for a first down.  2 of the INTs the QB threw it right to him.  He doesn't seem to shy away from hitting but he leaves a lot of room between himself and the receiver doesn't have great hips.

Thank you for putting together a great comment! He's not everyone's cup of tea. I definitely see your concerns but when I'm selecting draft picks I like to look at their ceiling. Nelson's in my opinion is very high. He has great physical traits for a NB and can pack a wallop. I like his instincts as well. He will need some coaching but I think he'd be a great pick. Do you have someone else in mind for a CB?

Devin Smith is so overrated on this forum.  He isn't a bad player (very good with his downfield route running), but he is not a first round prospect.

Where would you be okay taking him?

how well a WR can contort their body is one of the very FIRST traits i look at.if they aren't fluid in the hips...next.

edit:oops what i meant to say was CB...my mind has been preoccupied with WRs today

btw:if DG trades up in the fourth round in search of a defensive back.then i hope he is after a player such as Eric Rowe.

In this class?  I don't think he should go any higher than the third round.  I am almost certain there will be better receivers available at our pick in the first round, if we choose to go that direction.  I think this draft is so strong at receiver, we could/should (assuming Cooper/White aren't at our pick in the 1st, which they won't be) wait until the 2nd to take a receiver and still come away with a reliable #2 with #1 potential.

I liked the direction you took with your mock draft by the way.  You did a good job overall.  I just think that Devin Smith would be a massive reach at our pick in the 1st, partially because of how strong this class is at receiver and partially because Smith isn't a first-round prospect.  Not in my eyes, anyway.  I view him the same I did Kenny Stills, who is another good player but somebody I wouldn't take in the 1st.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
