I definitely call BS on this.  Why even have these discussions before the player you want is available there?  Also, no team is trading down before they see who is there.

It might be BS but this happens all the time. You talk to those above and below and see who is and who isn't interested in trading up or down and getting a value for what it might cost to do so.

Maybe a player you desire falls or maybe you want to leapfrog a team you believe has a similar need.

Setting up loose parameters prior to the draft means you don't end up like the Vikings two years in a row.

Trading up is not taking the BPA, is it?

Well, they said they are going to draft a RB so obviously a pure BPA scenario isn't in affect.

You can still trade up and take BPA tho. I mean, that's kinda why you trade up, you value that player so much you are willing to pay extra to get him.

For reference, here are the point totals attributed to the 17-24 picks via the standard draft value chart.

17. 950

18. 900

19. 875

20. 850

21. 800

22. 780

23. 760

24. 740

And then the values of our (tradeable) picks.

25. 720

57. 330

89. 145

124. 52

161. 30.2

201. 17.4

240. 4.6

Guys slide in the draft. Happens every year. It's not that big of a deal to talk to so many guys. I would be more worried if we only talked to a couple because we wouldn't be prepared if the guys we talked to were already gone.

All the stuff I'm referencing happened under the old GM.

In his first draft, Gettleman took a 'slider' too, but with very different results.

I wasn't referring to you in particular. Just the idea that looking at guys rated high on the big board means we wasting time looking at guys that won't be there.
