ESPN's Analysis of Our Pick, And Why I Feel It Was The Wrong Pick

I'm trying to figure out how people forgot Seattle absolutely teeing off on our guys

Seattle wins because they have a more dominant and talented D than we do. Shaq is a step in the right direction to building a Seattle-level D here. Seattle was very high on Shaq too (probably to replace Bruce Irvin, who they just refused his fifth-year option)

And note that Seattle had a trash OL and trash WRs/TEs the last two years. Our OL and top two receivers (Olsen/KB) are better than what they had on offense the last 2 yrs. And their OL just went to even more crap by them getting rid of their captain and All-Pro C in return for Graham, which gives Wilson a target, but at the cost of screwing their OL. Star and Kawann will feast

@rags and trg.

I'm willing to bet most here understand the spread, the nickel, and even the "big nickel" role, whether they know it or not...

And this leads us back to the issue with the pick... As the quote trg posted mentioned, Colin Jones played that big nickel role perfectly last season. Coincidentally, around that time he was put in that position, our defense turned things around and became elite again... Now, that coincided with increased roles for Norman, bene, and Boston as well, but still. Point is, we had a guy that already did what he is coming in to do, and did it well. And Colin is a phenomenal athlete as well.

To me, no matter how you cut it... WR is a gaping hole. Anything we did defensively was redundant and unnecessary when compared to WR.

Colin jones? Are you serious? He's a little firecracker and is fast but my god man. You are reaching hard.

I'm with you on the offense. I will be severely dissapointed if we go into the season as is. We got 8 more picks. Let's see how it shakes out.

I'm trying to figure out how people forgot Seattle absolutely teeing off on our guys because they looked like they were playing downhill on us... Our receivers couldn't get separation on top of horrible, long-developing routes. What happens when guys can't get open? The QB has to hold onto the ball and the pass rushers pin their ears back...

That wasn't just Seattle, that was all fuging year.

Of you don't have a problem with our WR corps, then you must enjoy masochism and also must be an advocate of cam newton abuse.

Thsts not even taking into account the numerous times our all-star receiving unit dropped open to passes, tipped passes up in the air for ints, and just straight up quit on routes (also resulting in ints). I've been involved with, played, and watched football for 20+ years and never before have i seen the crap I saw last season from our receiving unit.

Every season, except for Newton's rookie year, we left the stadium after the last game saying we have GOT to upgrade the offense and allow it be more explosive.

Everyone agrees when we see the Panther leave the field for the final time that season: "Okay, going into this offseason, priority number one is fixing the WR core, or fixing the oline."

Many even say: "I don't care if we use the first 3 picks on WR, WR, OL" and the entire draft on the offense.

Or: "Okay, in free agency, we need to pick up a solid No. 2 WR and a couple of good offensive linemen...lucky for us this is a DEEP free agent WR/OL class..."

By the time February rolls around, we get: "You know, our offense doesn't really need much upgrading...I know our best offensive line just retired, and we have not replaced him...but wouldn't it be cool if we got another DT to sack Matt Ryan, or chase Drew Brees around twice a year"?

By October, we have: "WE HAVE GOT TO BE THE SLOWEST TEAM IN THE NFL ON OFFENSE!! OMG WE HAVE GOT TO UPGRADE OUR OFFENSIVE SKILLS POSITIONS!! CAM NEWTON YOU SUCK!!!"

Rinse. Repeat.

8 rounds? And yeah I can't wait to get another 5th round wr I hear those guys are fuging amazing! Can't get enough of them! Hey I can't believe this guy want taken sooner! Oh wait he fuging sucks that's why. We need 1st and 2nd round wrs and OTs

8 picks.

Lots of guys left in the second round, or Hardy, Greene, someone in the third. It wont be the 5th round. Chill.

Obviously Gman and Rivera were not high on any of the remaining OTs or WRs in the first round, or did not want to reach and waste a pick while they had a guy they thought was a good match at 25. I would rather not reach for a WR or OT and regret it later.

Also, I can see Ginn working out as a decent speed #2 with Philly in the slot. Olsen is already our good hands receiver and KB is the go to guy. Would like to see us grab a WR and an OT in the draft, but will not complain if they come in late rounds or via UDFA.

Anyone talking about Shaq lacking size. Thomas Davis, Derrick Brooks, and Lavonte David say hi.

To anyone saying Shaq does not fill a need, please go look at the defensive trend of the #2 OLB run stopper being phased out for a hybrid OLB/S who can cover.

Some people just get left behind with the evolution of the game.

I agree Diddy. I'm frustrated and share your sentiments. This defense will need to hold opposing offenses to 15 PPG to have another shot at 11-5/12-4/13-3. My biggest worry is a couple broken plays against our defenses or quick turnovers by the offense and a 14 point lead early will be a hole too big to climb out of against even an average defense.

Can't wait to see how this defense handles Luck +TY Hilton + Andre Johnson + Phillip Dorsett + Dante Moncrief + Frank Gore + Coby Fleener/Dwayne Allen when they come to Charlotte on Monday night.

Good googly moogly! That's a mighty formidable offense.  Weapons galore!

Shaq had better live up to Gettleman's projected billing.

Honest question: How many seasons is it going to take for you to trust that we have a general manager that knows what he's doing?

Honest answer: As soon as humpty dumpty shows that he knows what he is doing. The jury is out and this is his year to shine.

I don't get why people act like he's done something special. We went 12-4 with Hurney's team and Riverboat. All those additions Gettleman was applauded for he didn't resign and we proceeded to get our ass whooped for most of last season. We were a bad football team last year and most of that was because of decisions made by Gettleman

The Colts understand that Luck is the cornerstone of their franchise and are giving him every opportunity to succeed. The same cannot be said for Cam Newton and the Panthers.
