David Newton: Tough cuts may be a coming at WR/RB

Some are saying Tolbert will be gone. I would rather use him as an actual RB and have an actual FB start but this whole thread is about limited roster space, so we know that won't happen. Shula has had a big back in the past, do we think he is willing to part with that? Outside of Jstew, Tolbert seems like the only other option to pound the rock. Cutting Tolbert has to be a consideration but I think Shula will use any influence he has to keep Tolbert on the roster.

Also, please cut Hill now.

Hard to say what the final roster will look like at this point so knowing how many WRs we keep is impossible to know. Still I wouldnt be surprised if we keep 6 receivers or possibly 7.  It depends on the tight end situation I suspect and how much we are going to throw versus pound the rock.  I know Shula has often been conservative and leaned toward the run but given he didnt have a ton of weapons that might be more out of necessity versus choice.  Now that he has the weapons it will be interesting to see if he is who many think he is or whether through his time with Chud and Newton he has evolved over the years.  Cuts and who we keep will go a long way to point to our philosophy on offense this year.

Everything the OP says has merit but injuries will cull the herd, they always do. Last year we beat Chicago with who at running back? Darrin Reeves and Chris Ogbhanaya with our "stacked" running back position deactivated.

All it takes is a few pulled hammies and the decisions won't seem so hard. The one thing I do feel strongly about is developmental players like David Foucalt have to prove they can play now or they will be developing on the practice squad where they belong.

I personally think Cotchery is safe as a veteran player. It's not about coaching, it's about culture. Players need to be motivated to do what they do and one of the strongest motivators is comradery. Coach Proehl can't be around the WRs at all times.

The one negative that sticks with me for Cotchery is that bizarre interception vs. the Cardinals where he broke off his route and left cam out to dry. I just don't understand how a veteran receiver does that.

And Proehl heaped praise on Bersin in a recent interview but also hinted he could be on a different roster come September.

I dont get the love for Hill. What has he done his entire time here? Nothing.

I haven't seen anyone profess any "love for Hill".  It's more about hoping that his measurables on paper transform into production on the field.  Any sane Panthers fan should want that.

I would hope that Proehl and Rivera are correct in their belief that Hill is prepared for a good showing because according to them he has certainly put in the work.

As for some type of Gettis syndrome as Mr. Igo is trying to imply, Gettis put up near 500 yards his rookie year (and had a good showing the preseason that he was cut). Hill hasn't done anything yet, so there is really no parallel.

Why root against a guy as opposed to wishing that the best man wins?  That's what I "don't get".

Added with SEVERAL dropped clutch passes.

He had one drop last year.  Him and Cam also had one miscommunication.  People need to stop exaggerating his poor play.  I know many want Brown to be the next big thing, and they blame Cotchery for being something he isn't.  He's a possession receiver that was asked to play the role of a #2.  Blame the team, not Cotchery.

And now we don't need him to play the 2 or 3 anymore so why keep him around?

RB:

Stewart

Whittaker

Artis-Payne

WR:

Benjamin

Funchess

Cotchery

Ginn

Brown, C.

Boykin

Tolbert & Bersin cut.

Hill remains on the PS. The Huddle bitches profusely whenever any WR makes a minor mistake & rages about how Hill is better & Rivera is stupid.

I don't think Tolbert is cut.  I also think that either Hill makes the final 53, or he is gone.  He had his development year to see if he has what it takes.  Either he shows enough development or he they cut bait...after all, he'll be a FA after this season.  I just can't see them spending another year developing him only to have him walk to another team.

Because he's still the best possession receiver we have.  I think many are also underestimating the importance of a veteran presence in the WR room.  He offers way more than his detractors understand.  Is he replacable?  Yes!  But for those that want to see him gone, your best bet was Greg Jennings choosing us.  However, since he didn't, I wouldn't get to attached with the idea of not seeing him in a Panther uniform this year.
