Three teams in trouble with the FAA for using drones to film practices

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

...and I bet you can guess who one of them is.

FAA says it is probing NFL teams use of drones to film practices

Now, in this case, the teams are filming their own practices.  The problem is that they didn't get the proper permissions from the Federal Aviation Administration to fly these drones for commercial use.

So nobody is using drones to film their opponent's practices...

...yet.

It's stupid that you need the government's permission to fly a small little drone on your own property.

You don't.

The key phrase here is "for commercial use". Amazon wants to use them to deliver packages. Got to have some parameters and control or the sky would be littered with these things.

You know people that own air space? Do tell more.

the space above your property is an extension of your property, just as the ground below it is.

The same way you own any mineral deposit you find under your property, you also own the resource above it which is the very space above it.

private businesses ought to be entitled to the same rights as individuals.

I understand the need to register aircraft and track their whereabouts. But it shouldn't be illegal to fly unmanned aircraft without Big Brother's permission. I think an alternative should be steeper penalties for property damage and personal injury.

So you think Amazon or Dominos should be able to put a few hundred thousand of these in the sky with no government control ? A hobby is one thing. Commercial use is another.

no individuals owns any airspace as far as I know.  all airspace is the property of the government.  for that reason you can't tell airline companies they can't fly over your property or anything like that.

naturally, the private ownership of airspace cannot extend indefinitely. There has to be an limit at which other aircraft can fly, but who needs to fly drones for personal use at 30,000 feet? Similarly, what business entity needs to fly 300 feet above my house without my consent, no matter where I live? Come on now. We can't be extremists about this.

Someone who owns a farm in rural NC miles from an airport can have a higher private property ceiling than someone living next door to Charlotte Douglas Int.'l.

    • You're making conflicting arguments here though. If you want to say we don't have ideal depth and need another Safety for that reason, okay, that's fair. But if you want to talk about "the future at safety" then there is only one possible answer there, and he's already on the roster with Ransom. No FA out there right now is someone who would be a FS of the future for us, they'd all be one year fill-in's until we can replace them next offseason with a long term solution.  So if there is anyone with even a remote possibility of playing FS for us this year and then being our long term solution there, it's Ransom. Which is why I say throw him out there as the starter in Week 1 unless he severely struggles in camp.  The only way we'll know if we found a cheap FS for the next 3-4 years is by playing him and seeing if he can do the job. If he proves he can be the guy, then we have a minimal cap hit solution at FS through the 2028 season and can use that cap space and draft picks next year towards pass rushers, LB's, and/or a C or RT of the future.  If he struggles and we see he needs to be a backup SS for us instead, then we turn around and use those assets next offseason to find the long term solution. But signing a 1 year rental to play there takes that possibility away while also eating into the cap room we could roll over into next year.
    • Tanking in the NFL isn’t really a thing and anybody wanting to bring the rigged lottery to the NFL has an ulterior motive.
    • I understand where you're coming from, but we need another safety IMHO. Other positions, especially on defense, dont have ideal depth, but to me at least S is the one position we can't stand pat at even when thinking about the future
