Pro Football Weekly Panthers Preview

Best Case Scenario:

The Panthers are still a rather young team across the board. If the adjustments in the secondary can provide at least enough rotation to suffice behind what should be a devastating front seven, Carolina's defense can be a very good one. Cam Newton appears ready to take the next step with some more help, so if the line improves now that the coaches know who its starters are and if a secondary receiver emerges, Carolina could push deep into the postseason.

Worst Case Scenario:

The Panthers didn't do much to address their offensive line in the draft, which means Newton and Jonathan Stewart could still take a pounding. Carolina will have a hard time winning if either one goes down. On defense, there's no guaranteeing that part time secondary players will be able to handle a full time load in a division with Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Jameis Winston. Shaq Thompson might need time to develop. A below .500 year is possible.

Because of how they worded their worst case scenario "A sub 500 season is possible" it seems they chose to go Worst Case Scenario for us....

Were they only able to choose one or the other?

Oh man I'll be glad when the season gets here so we can shut people up.

I was thinking the meant just the opposite. I thought it was pretty spot on.

they literally chose the worst case scenario lmao

that is because they are not sold on the OL moves.  Oher is a risky move given the past few years of performance.  They do not think he can get it done....which is a very real possibility.

I personally think he is going to surprise a lot of people and the OL will be more than solid.

I'm still worried about LT too, but at least the line should be solid across the board other than LT.  At worst, I think Oher will at least be better than Bell.  At best, maybe reuniting with Matsko will make him a decent LT.  I don't think we're signing Jonathan Ogden here by any stretch, but just an average LT, hell a below average LT would still be a significant upgrade from Byron Bell.  We can compensate for one weak OT.  But we spent a good chunk of last year with two terrible OTs.  You can't compensate for that.

    • Regardless of how we got here, any rational fan should be excited by how well Bryce played down the stretch. Anyone not happy about that level of play either doesn't know what they're looking at, or they're still trying to drive tired narratives. Obviously, Cam had an all-time rookie season, and I'm not putting the two in the same basket yet, but as someone who has watched every snap of Panthers football since the start of the new millennium (Im old), Bryce was playing at a higher level at the end of 2024 than Cam was at the end of 2012 (his 2nd season). Cam continued to develop into MVP form, something Bryce has to prove, but as someone who watched both (and will stan for Cam always), Bryce was playing at a higher level to end year 2 than Cam did.  Go watch the film if you dont believe me. None of that means anything for the future. But the people who said BY9 couldnt play in this league are wrong.   That being said, the only thing that matters is this year. #20 is perfectly fair IMO going into the season. I mean think about it, how would you rank him??!  His in-season turnaround is one of the wildest things I've ever seen... how do you rank a guy who looked like a massive bust in September and by January was consistently playing at a top 10 level? My excitement level is pretty damn high heading into this season. There were throws from the Chiefs game onward where Bryce had Drew Brees levels of anticipation. Im excited to see what he can do with a full deck on offense, something we really never gave Cam. Really hope and expect Bryce to move up this list this season.
    • Not really, the only QB's (other than Anthony Richardson) ranked below him are new to their teams as a placeholder starter or drafted in 2024 or 2025, not a lot of gymnastics to get there. It's not about how many that is, if it's 20, 12, or 2... It means there isn't a QB who's team has committed to them for the long term right now that they have ranked below Bryce. That's not a great thing.
    • The changes to onside kicks were ridiculous and ruined a significant part of the game     It was already a high risk low reward play.  Why change it?
