Crazy question: Backup kicker?

So, we signed Punter Matt Wile today.  I and others quickly made the assumption that he's a "camp leg."  Normal.

Then I got thinking...  with the change in extra point distance, is there any chance that could influence the team to carry an insurance kicker?  I can't imagine we'd do that.  Roster spots are so precious, especially with our depth right now.

Do any team carry an extra specialist?  Who on the team could be a backup kicker or punter were Nortman or Gano to need backup?  It's a question I've never really thought about.  When the kickers are decent it's easy to take them for granted, and just let them get on quietly with their work in the background.

ah, of course.  Hadn't thought about Gano & Nortman being backup for one another, DUH.  Like I said it was a crazy (dumb) question.  My reason for asking was that with the extra point now being the equivalent of a short field goal, it takes a bit more skill & accuracy, thus perhaps meaning fewer on the team could fill in in a pinch if Gano were injured.

I imagine Gano and Nortman back each other up.  I don't know why the extra point change would cause a team to carry a second kicker.

Hopefully Nortman won't pull a Sauerbraun and get bitchy if that happens.

This prompted me to go back and read a recap of his career.  He was like the Kenny Powers of punters.  I had forgotten about him getting all cocky and wanting more money to fill in as the field goal kicker for the Panthers.  He was once called "The Worst Person in the NFL".  You have to be a special kind of d-bag to earn that title in the league.

He did break face masks on tackles though. I liked that about him.

Especially as a punter

Maybe y'all are too young to remember but in 2008 the Panthers carried two kickers and a punter.  John Kasay was too old to do kickoffs anymore so the Panthers had Rhys Lloyd doing kickoffs.  I doubt that happens again - Gano has one of the strongest legs in the league.  If he gets injured in a game, the punter assumes his duties and they sign someone else for the next game.  There are literally kickers just sitting around waiting for a call - that's how the Panthers got Gano

I remember Rhys. He wasn't just a mediocre kickoff guy - he was by far the best in the league. He was getting touchbacks around 30% of the time, back when the ball was kicked at the 30.

Gano might be even better. Last year he got touchbacks 77.2% of the time - the closest guy to him was Pat McAfee, with only 72.9%. We got insanely lucky on the Gano pickup.

The problem with Rhys was that he couldn't have consistent accuracy to be a full time kicker in the league. You can have the strongest leg in the world, but if you can kick it between the uprights it won't keep you around long. John being gone and him around lead to the signing to everyone's crowd favorite Mare. Plus you can't take up 4 spots on your rosters just for a Long Snapper, Kick off kicker, field goal kicker, and punter. Its a numbers game.

    • Option 1 is most likely. Even if he kills it this year, it wouldn't be prudent to rush an extension for one good season. If you have to pay him more because you waited another year, then he earned it. And that's OK. Adjust accordingly.
    • Cam had the advantage of having a very strong supporting cast his first 2 seasons. Things definitely worsened later on. But those first couple of years can kill a QB. Some never truly recover. If they do recover it takes years, and usually with another team. Trying to learn to be an NFL QB with TEs and WRs that are trying to learn too is a recipe for disaster. Imagine if Cam's rookie season was that 2014 offensive squad. Changes everything! I said it when they moved up in 2023. This team wasn't ready for a rookie QB yet. Anyone that thinks Stroud would have been a lot better is delusional. The correct formula is to build a strong team and then you go get your rookie QB. Not the other way around. BY is going into his third season and we're still trying to put a respectable group of WRs and TEs around him. I think they have the right personnel now. Unfortunately they haven't developed into actual NFL players yet.  This season we should expect consistency and aggressiveness from BY. Mostly for his development but also to DEVELOP his young cast.
    • It is goofy how some people hate Bryce so much that they're flat out lying to try and remain entitled to their pessimism. It's insanity. Most fans are realists and eagerly awaiting the season to see if we get pre- or post-benching Bryce to start the season and how much he is able to do with some young and developing weapons. Many of us understand that these young guys are going to have growing pains on the job as well as the new defense, but the fans with all of the excuses for why Bryce can't be successful are pounding the no excuses drum. Personally, I'd prefer the Keep Pounding drum.
