Philly Brown

WOW!!

Jarrett Boykin is better than Philly Brown. I wouldn't cut him just yet. I would put him on the practice squad.

I wouldn't cut Philly.  I think he showed enough last year to make the roster and get another shot.  Especially considering what we currently have at WR.  It's not like we'd be cutting proven NFL performers to keep him.  Right now, my WR squad would be:

Funchess, Ginn, Cotchery, Philly, Boykin, and Bersin.

If that lineup doesn't chill you to your very soul, I'm not certain what would.  That's very nearly the WR corps equivalent of Bell/Chandler.

Like I said, we need Funchess to be legit just to not go backwards from last year and last year's WR corps was hot trash outside of KB.

we don't have to have a 1000 yd reciever to be successful.  The last time Cam was healthy our leading reciever was Olson at 800+ yds. We went 12-4. I think we have a better all around team this year.

I hope you're right.  Though, I will say that in '13, even though Smitty was no longer a legit #1 WR, he was still getting legit #1 WR attention from the defense and that's the main reason he didn't go for over 1000 yards.  There's no WR on our roster that will get anywhere close to that type of attention.

I'm being very optimistic when I say this.  It's possible Funchess size and raw athleticism could draw some extra coverege as this season progresses. We shall see.

It is always a natural expectation for fans or for the inexperienced eye to consider the draft pic as an the next big thing. The Panthers have a Receiver that is quietly positioning himself as a serious candidate for the practice squad if not a roster spot. Paul Browning has very good hands. If he plays well on Friday or scores a TD. Panther fans will begin to know his name. Do not be surprised if Browning makes the practice squad and emerges as one of the Panthers top receivers.

That's the problem.. He is either that or not long for this league..

And this is why he needs to work on those hands...

I don't know how you go from he is either that or basically gone. I think that he fits on someone's bench quite nicely. Plus, he can practice all the while and get his game up to speed until his upgrade comes and takes his spot.

I'm never surprised to see some dumb comments after a player has a bad Preseason game.

But enough with that nonsense how about that bum Philly Brown dude needs to get it together this is not training camp or anything.

You assume that people are basing their opinion off of one preseason game when he has played an entire season without showing anything but mediocrity. On any other team in the NFL, Corey Brown is riding the bench, or improving on the practice squad. It just so happens that our corps has left a lot to be desired for many years, and Corey Brown is the next JAG up that some Panthers fans want to crown as the next Victor Cruz.

but we sing oher's praises after 2 preseason games even tho he has been hot trash for other teams.  Not saying philly is the man but we know nothing till it starts counting at this point.

Oher hasn't exactly been "trash". The man did help Baltimore to a Super Bowl.  Moreover, I think that it's an oversight not to take his injuries into the equation, particularly as it pertains to last year. Lastly, he is healthy and back with the coach who helped him to produce at a high level, so at least we have something more concrete to hope for as it pertains to Oher.

Brown has been a Panther for a year, so there is a fair amount to draw some conclusions. To say that we know nothing based on two preseason games isn't telling the whole truth. I think that we know enough to tell that he's not a superstar, but maybe he will surprise us.

I actually have higher hopes for Damiere Byrd than I do Corey. Byrd is just so much smoother than Brown. Brown is more of a straight line speed type guy and is somewhat more choppy than smooth kind of like Jaelen Strong who I wasn't a fan of during the draft.

Brown deserves a spot on this roster no question about it part of it is due to lack of competition. The two WR's that we should be questioning are Cotchery and Bersin, both don't really bring anything to the table. I'd hate to see us keep either in favor of Byrd or Boykin.

I think that Byrd just has the ability to be a better version of Brown, and I would hate to see us lose that type of potential in order to keep Brown.  I think that Brown is getting a lot of his reps by default, and if it were up to me I'd give Byrd some of those reps with the first team to see if he could excel where Brown has struggled.

I just flat out think that Boykin is a better receiver than Brown, but arguably not as good of a fit depending on what one is looking for.  I think that a starting group of Funchess, Ginn, and Boykin in the slot would be serviceable.  Enter in Byrd at some point, and the receiving corps gets a little more interesting. That's my fan perspective anyway.

    • Facts it's still crazy that they made him sell over that especially considering what some of the other owners have done.  JR was a rich 80 year old white man from the south I'm not at all surprised about him making some "inappropriate" comments about what a woman is wearing water is wet what a surprise. That's just the way things were done during his time, and he should and did get punished for his actions by paying some hefty fines, but it definitely wasn't something that he should've been forced to sell his team over.  I'll never forget him insulting Peyton Manning during a negotiation, reportedly belittling the quarterback’s knowledge of player safety and asking, “Do I need to help you read a revenue chart, son?
    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
