Not much in potential receiver cuts

Has Binns even played any football the last 3 years? I can't find anything past 2012.

Sanders could possibly be worth a look, but we already have a similar WR in Byrd.

Rogers bouncing around from team to team combined with his legal troubles make his chances of interest on our part pretty minimal.

All in all, it's not a great time to be looking for a WR.

I'm just hoping Funchess can step up, but we shouldn't put too much pressure on him.

Binns was on KC's practice squad last season. Had a knee injury in '13. But he also had a hell of a college career when he wasn't in trouble. For what it's worth it seems he's past that now.

Rogers' issues with breaking the law render him unlikely, yes. But if it were me, I'd kick the tires. He's got some talent. There is absolutely no harm in bringing a guy in for a workout and getting a better look at him.

BUT, I have a question about what you wrote.  Do we have snap counts / number of targets for each WR?  If Cam didn't throw the ball to other open wide receivers, how could they step up?  I believe Corey Brown got the huge share of targets last night?  Can someone provide hard numbers of targets & snap counts for the WRs?

I don't think I've ever quoted myself before (LOL) but I did find some of the answers to my question.

Corey Brown had more snaps than anyone else on the offense:  56 of 76 total snaps.  Bersin had 40.  Boykin had 15.

http://espn.go.com/blog/carolina-panthers/post/_/id/15316/what-snap-counts-mean-for-panthers-shaq-thompson-corey-brown-and-others

Corey Brown: Nobody on either team played more than Brown’s 56 snaps. That’s because Brown asked to play longer after dropping four passes in the first half. He wanted to work on catching with his hands and not his body, which led to the drops. He had one reception for 5 yards in the second half. He also had another deep pass he could have caught, but we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on that one because the defender was there.

I have less information about the number of TARGETS per receiver.  Joe Person tweeted this:

Joe Person @josephperson 44m44 minutes ago

1/1 for Bersin; 4/2 for Boykin. RT @NashMorris how many targets/catches Boykin vs Bersin?

I don't know the numbers yet for Ginn & Olsen or Cotchery.

the Chargers  kept 5 WR last year and their top 4 seems set in stone this year Allen,Floyd,Johnson, and Jones

their 5,6,7 Inman,Tyrell Williams and Austin Pettis is better than our 4 and 5 right now and Inman is better than our #3.

it's going to interesting to see what they ultimately decide to do in San Diego with this logjam at WR.

i could insert the Saintis here, and keep doing this all day.but what really matters is that the Panthers need to add solid depth through other teams cuts  at WR if they plan on addressing this position by committee

We have a really good history of getting players from the Chargers (no surprise with the RR connection).

Back when I was doing the "Roster Trivia quiz" questions, one of the questions I considered posting was which teams we'd acquired the most players from.

This was the question:

Looking at all the teams the players on the current Panthers roster have EVER been associated with (Drafted, TC, PS), which team have the most players been linked to at some point in their past?

AnswerSan Diego.  9 players have had some time there.  MIA is second with 8 players

Also, this variant:

Which are the top 2 NFL "teams of origin" for Panthers players signed from around the league? (i.e. the team that FIRST drafted or signed the player)?

Answer: Baltimore & San Diego - 5 players each

Some of the players with San Diego in their past include: Tolbert, Remmers, Fozzy, Brockel, Todman.

As has been stated before, trading for a receiver in our situation probably isn't a very practical idea.  You're likely looking at trading for a three year contract when what you really want is a one year band-aid since Benjamin will be back next season and Funchess will have a year under his belt. So if anybody new is coming, it'll probably be someone found on the waiver wire after roster cuts.

With that in mind, I took a (very quick and cursory) look at receiver depth charts around the league to see if there was anyone interesting on the bubble.

The answer?  From what I can see, not much.

Names like Greg Salas (who's on his fifth team) and former Panther Tavarres King (who was cut early last year) dot the landscape of 5s, 6s and beyond.  Not exactly exciting prospects.

One name I did find mildly interesting: Tyler Murphy, a former QB from Boston College (started at Florida) who the Steelers are trying at receiver.  He's looked decent in preseason action but might not make the final roster.

To be honest, if you were looking for a savior to come from other team's cuts, you were likely gonna be disappointed anyway.  Barring any surprises, the most you can hope for is depth, and even that prospect doesn't really appear to hold anything all that great.

So basically, if you're waiting for someone to come in and make everybody forget Corey Brown, I wouldn't hold my breath.  Anything can happen, of course, but it looks highly unlikely.

why would we only be open to a band-aid?  We don't have tons of talent.  We have a Funchess who we know nothing of really.  We have KB who will take a year off with a knee injury....never know, that could derail his career.  Maybe a year off of football will be bad news for him in 2017 (he has a history of getting out of shape when he only has an offseason and has played all year.....now he had a full year of not playing).

WR is one of the few spots taking on talent and a contract would be reasonable for actual talent IMO

It was chiseled into stone last night that our offense isn't broken and any other option at WR outside of what is presently on the roster is "mediocre."
