interesting thing about Kalil's contract

Captain Morgan

Panther bros understand this, the FO guys( dave/beane/others) use tactics to manipulate contracts to gain benefits for the cap. One is adding "dummy/void" years to contract to spread out the signing bonus/cap hit/etc.

Kalils' deal will have some type of trigger to void the 2017/18 season, unless he and his agent work out a new contract. Same contract for other ie stew, harper, cotchey, cj etc. Remember the cap hell of years past, well it remains in the form of these contracts. The new spin on robbing peter to pay Paul for nfl cap dealings.

yeah, the more I think about it...I think the odds of Kalil going the Gross path are decent.

As long as he doesn't do it the same way Gross & Wharton did, sorta' all of a sudden. Gettleman, I'm sure, has a plan to consider drafting a center or signing a young talented UDFA center in the next year or so. I trust that he doesn't want to get caught off guard like that again, ever.

Gross' wasn't all of a sudden.  Front office knew he was gone before he played his last season.

Nothing off guard about that one...

As others have pointed out those last 2 years are voidable years that were added to spread out a bonus that he received.  The $1m salary is basically just a placeholder.

For all practical purposes Kalil is scheduled to be a free agent in 2017.  He could sign with another team or retire and we would still be responsible for 3.3 million in dead money.

To put it in perspective his total cap cost for the 2 years he has left under contract(2015 and 2016) is roughly 25 million.

cut our best DE?

Great plan.

Things are never so black and white. We get $11 million in cap relief if we cut him. Can we do more for the team with that money than we can with him is a question that Gman will have to ask himself. We could also renegotiate the contract. Who knows what is going to happen, but its not so clear cut.

i know it's not clear cut.

I'm  confident he'll still be a Panther next season.
