New Orleans Saints safety Jairus Byrd returned to practice for the first time since June 17.

Cornerback Keenan Lewis, who recently had hip surgery and was expected to be out for several weeks, also returned to practice. Lewis has not practiced since Aug. 18.

Byrd participated in the portion of practice open to the media Wednesday. He was last seen at practice on Aug. 7 when he did some light jogging off to the side during training camp.

Brandin Cooks and Jahri Evans did not participate in the portion of practice open to the media.

Byrd tore his lateral meniscus last season and went on injured reserve for the rest of the year. He had recovered enough to take part in OTAs and minicamp in June on a limited basis, but missed the final practice of minicamp and has not practiced since.

A source said Byrd experienced swelling in his knee during the summer, which he saw a specialist about. Byrd also brought in his own doctor to consult about the knee.

Rafael Bush was to be the starter at free safety in Byrd's absence, but went down in Week 1 with a torn pec. In the locker room on Monday, Bush was in good spirits about his rehab.

Lewis also has been a regular figure around the locker room, although he's stopped short of saying when he'd return, simply smiling and saying "I'll be all right," when asked. Delvin Breaux has started as outside cornerback in his place.

When Lewis returns, Breaux likely will be shifted back to the nickel position, where he practiced all summer.

They actually were only with the team for stretching and jogging portions. Byrd participated in individual drills, but neither participated in team drills, which is why they are both DNPs.

Lewis is a definite no go for this weekend, I think. Byrd may go, but I think he'll be held out until next weekend.

thank you, sir.

    • Btw... only Mitch fugging Marner has a better +/- than Key 🔑!!! And, Mitchy needed 5 more games and almost 100 more shifts to get there.
    • I was honestly flabbergasted to see Rod send out Stanky and the boys to to matchup against their top line to start the game. The reason that line has been so effective is because they've been matched mostly against 2nd and 3rd lines all year. You've got last change. Use it to your advantage.
    • Nobody played well on defense last night. But, the vitriol towards Chatfield (and to a lesser extent, K'andre) is bigly misplaced. People (not just you) just refuse to accept how bad Slavin has been this season. And, I get it. Canes fans (and informed analysts) have spent nearly a decade trying to explain to casuals just how good Jaccccob is at hockey. 4Nations happened and the hockey watching public started to listen. National media even started floating the idea of creating a new award in his honor. Then this season, he gets hurt. It happens. NBD. But, when he finally came back, it wasn't the same. He'll get back to his old self in no time. Probably just some rust, it'll be fine. Only, it wasnt rust, and he's not fine. He's bad right now. It wasnt just last night. Although, that was absolutely the worst game of his NHL career. Slavin (-4) currently has the 3rd worst +/- of anyone left in the playoffs. We've  been begging the world to recognize Jaccob Slavin's greatness. And, by the time we finally got people to listen, he shits the bed! I blame Kash!
