Interesting Stat From PFF

Our run blocking is still questionable.

That is a nice way to put it.  I mean it really is nonexistent....and they couldn't do it in the preseason either.

My personal belief is a lot of it play design and frequency of parts of our playbook.  Think the "this is what we are doing" and "everyone knows it so let's see if you can stop it" mentality that makes up the bulk of our O hurts us.  No issue w/ ball control but it is hard to create running lanes IMO just on the some of the formations and where we are trying to run.

The future of the O-line feels pretty solid barring injury (knock on wood).  It appears they are grooming T-Will for the RT position and Remmers as a utility backup and possible future Center.

I still believe the long term answer at LT is going to have to come from the draft.  Oher has proven to be serviceable and on a two year contract.  Look for us to draft an LT to groom into the starter once Oher's contract expires.

I haven't looked too closely at Football Outsiders and all their statistics, and I don't claim to understang Oline stats very well...  but if I understand these data, we rank 19th currently in run blocking, and 18th in pass blocking

last year we appear to have been 27th in run blocking and 22 in pass blocking

Oher given up how many sacks?  One against the reining DPOY.  While he isn't elite I wouldn't put him any lower than the rest of the squad.  You have to remember the LT is going against (usually) the most athletic player on the Defensive line.  He is going to get beat now and then.

IMO he has done a great job and hardly a worry.

He gave up 2 against Jacksonville and has given up quite a few pressures.

That sack by Watt wasn't on Oher.   Don't know who they put it on....Oher was nowhere near him

Clemmons DE and Stuka OLB got the sacks.  You going to pin both those on Oher.  OK

Hate to tell you this but the NFL isn't Madden.  Your LT face the best player on the D-Line most of the time.  They aren't going to win EVERY battle.  There isn't one LT in the game the goes perfect through the season.

But, it your story.

Yes I'm going to pin those on Oher because he was beaten badly 1 on 1 both times. Clemons put him in the spin cycle and Skuta just ran him straight back to Cam and sacked him with Oher helplessly in the middle of it. Obviously no LT wins every battle but giving up 2 sacks in addition to other hits and pressures is a really bad game.

PFF has him rated as the 55th best tackle this year out of 70ish and on the left side he's only ahead of 3 rookies and the guy filling in for Brandon Albert in Miami. That's good for 28th in the NFL. Its better than Byron for sure but he is by no means the answer there.

*** it let just bring back Bell.  Too many of you live and die by what PFF says.  It's 2 freaking games and one was against arguably the best DL in the NFL.  Oher is playing well and the haters (usually the same ones that have dislike the signing from the beginning) look to keep their theory alive that he is garbage.

Strap on a helmet.. Sounds like you can do better.

The line will be fine this season. Jacksonville and Houston are two very physical D-Lines and both top 5. (St. Louis, Jacksonville, Houston, Miami, Buffalo the top 5). The Saints, Falcons, and Bucs have horrid pass rush so we should be able to dominate those games.

However, I would still go OT in the 1st round of the draft. Kalil could pull a Gross and Oher is a replacement level player who would be good depth. To me, there are three glaring holes on this team preventing them from being Super Bowl contenders, and we need to shore up at least two of them in the draft and pick the other for free agency...... OT, WR, and DE.  However the league has never seen such a dearth of OT talent right now so the only way to improve that position will be the draft.... Likewise, the league has a giant surplus of WR talent so we might be able to shore that up in free agency.

It's amazing and depressing that the league has never seen so much WR talent yet the Panthers currently don't have a top 60 WR on the roster.....Which means that every other team in the league could pick two WR's before the Panthers could pick their first.... Benjamin was a huge blow.
