Gettlemen only offered JNo 7 mill per season before the season started

The Panthers negotiated with Norman before the season, offering him a multi-year deal worth an average of more than $7 million a year, according to a source.

Norman said in training camp he wants to be paid like one of the league’s top corners.

Besides Darrelle Revis, Byron Maxwell was the big free agent corner last offseason. Philadelphia gave Maxwell a $63 million contract, an average of $10.5 million a year, then watched the former Seahawks corner give up a perfect passer rating on balls thrown his way in losses to Atlanta and Dallas.

While Maxwell could be a market study in overspending at the position, Norman has elevated his play and increased his leverage each week. Norman began making his case last season when he morphed from a guy prone to freelancing and giving coaches heartburn to a No. 1, lockdown corner.

“You can take into consideration what I did last year, as well,” Norman said. “I’m not going down. I’m only going to continue to get better and go up higher.”

That’s a good problem for the Panthers.

General manager Dave Gettleman has shown he’ll take care of the players who perform on the field and lead in the locker room. Norman fits the first category and is improving in the latter.

four years, ~35m would be completely fair.

that said gettles is smart to not give him a contract if he'd already committed 7+ in his mind. let norman keep playing for a contract, get a great year out of him, and then bump up the offer by a paltry million or two per year and lock him down.

that's how good GMs do it.

Eh, if that's true I'd think $7mil was a fair offer for what Norman had done for us at that point.  Yea he played very well last year, but it was only one year.  It would be great if they work out a deal over the bye week and lock him down, but at the end of the season it's really gonna cost us when he has a Pro Bowl and possibly All Pro on his resume.

If Norman keeps up his level of play (as in not Top 10, not Top 10, but Top 1 cornerback play), he'll deserve a massive contract and I'm inclined to believe we'll give it to him. He's singlehandedly why we're 3-0 instead of 1-2. Say what you will about how great Cam has been, if Norman doesn't pick 6 Bortles and pick off McCown, we're 1-2 even with Cam balling out. Josh Norman has been Team MVP through 3 games.

Josh Norman is the best cornerback this team has ever had.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
