Panthers Jared Allen - First Impressions

I just watched the interview with Allen in the locker room, and man, he's a great dude.  Fits the culture and personality the Panthers try to have.  It's a shame they couldn't have gotten him years ago.  Can't think of a better team for him to finish off his career.  Hope he has some game left in the tank and sticks around a couple years.

His weight is a non-issue. He said in an interview that everyone thinks he lost weight because he was wearing LB pads which are smaller than DE pads. He is 255lb the same weight he has been for seven seasons.

I have always wanted this guy, he was an absolute terror for the Vikings for years at his natural position of DE, I think his best years are still ahead of him. Absolute steal from Chicago. This will go down as the best move ever by G-Man.

... The rest of our DEs are mostly pass rushers, CJ and Big Frank were the guys strong against the run.

Our defense is predicated on stopping the run and forcing 3rd and long where we have a myriad of looks and packages to fool the QB. If our run d suffers and we find ourselves in 3rd and short constantly, it could be bad.

Horton is primarily a run defender. Addison, on the other hand, is primarily a rush DE.

Not that either are great, but they are certainly part of the equation.

I know that Allen used to be a beast in all aspects of the game, but i havent watched him in a few years. How is his run defense?

CJ is stellar at run defense, and I hope that Allen can help hold the fort down for the next few weeks. The rest of our DEs are mostly pass rushers, CJ and Big Frank were the guys strong against the run.

From the games I watched last year so-so, but part of that was scheme as it looked like his responsibility was pass rush,  outside contain, run defense over the tackle/te in that order (trying to utilize his pass rushing skills against the play action I guess) even on non obvious passing situations.

We can trust Rivera to get whatever is left in Allens tank out as he understands how to keep the dline fresh.

    • Trevon Moehrig, Turk Wharton, Bobby Brown, Jaelen Phillips, Devin Lloyd, Nic Scourton Giving him 6 starters in 2 offseasons that cost boat loads of money or a 2nd round pick... Not exactly handing the man scraps. The point of the draft is to make the team better. You want to make this about Bryce. It isn't. It's about improving the team. And if anyone can look at our offense and go "we're good", they are lying to themselves. You give quarterbacks weapons. We SCREAMED for YEARS to give Cam some help. But now because we are trying to do it for Bryce, you all are saying we are coddling him because of his "deficiencies". It's a double-standard because you don't like the guy, clearly. But even if he does fail, guess what? The next guy has help too. Win-win.
    • we have 2 solid/above average (however you want to phrase that) wr's, which is more than half the league at least.  We dont need to be blowing more first round capital just to placate Bryce and his limitations.   We have one absolute stud (probably top 10 wr) in tmac and we have a high floor guy with insane potential if he can stay healthy.  Yeah man we are in better shape than the bulk of the teams in the league.  If you need to add some speed or whatever, sure draft in the mid rounds or wait until tc cuts.  Its monumentally stupid to spend 3 straight firsts on a wr if thats the route they go.  ITs just more and more excuses for Bryce, thats where we are at now.    "How can bryce succeed without a big possession type wr (drafts 2 for him), how is bryce supposed to exceed without a speed guy......."   Its fuging never ending.  Give EE some goddamn help on defense for once
    • Tight ends in the first round just have so much risk. Even guys that look like guarantees at the position, fail. OJ Howard is a big one that comes to mind (and I REALLY liked him and thought he was going to be a stud in the NFL). I know that every player/position can be a gamble, but when you look at Kyle Pitts (he's come a long way, but he has clearly underperformed), TJ Hockenson, Hayden Hurst, Noah Fant, Eric Ebron, etc., NONE of these guys changed the dynamic of their team for the better. Zero. In fact, most of them end up being traded before their rookie deal is up. This draft has some good tight ends. I wouldn't spend a 1st on one.
