The Devin Funchess "drop"

On 3rd and 7 with a big lead it was obvious the Panthers wanted to get Devin Funchess in the end zone in hopes to build his confidence and get him going. This was simply a practice play plain and simple. At least I hope so because Cam never looked for anyone else, he had Ed Dickson wide open for an easy touchdown.

he threw it behind Funchess, was still catch-able.  btw I dont think I have seen carolina try to run up the score like that before.  Aggressive. I like it.

Technically if Cam had dropped and tried to go to Dickson then Conte wouldve broke that direction. Still images can be really deceiving. 

 

I do think we were probably trying to get him into the endzone though. He shouldve had that one.

If I remember correctly, this was his first read (he threw it very shortly after the snap).  Unfortunately, if Funchess is "open" in NFL terms, this is the right decision and he never would see Dickson wide open.  The important thing to me would be if he decided NOT to throw to Funchess, then how quickly does he get off that read and onto the 2nd and 3rd reads.  I think he has done a tremendous job of it so far this season.

I probably should have created a gif, I think a quick look to funchess would have been enough to hold him. Dickson would have scored either way.

The throw wasn't perfect obviously, but Funch got his hands on it.

Not necessarily an "easy" catch for a rookie, but he's got to capitalize on those.

I don't fault Funchess at all for not bringing that in.

Truthfully, it was a sub-par throw by Cam that could have been placed better but still could have been caught albeit difficultly by Funchess.
