The Titans make me worry with their short passing game

Per Pro Football Focus, 74.4 percent of Mariota's passes were thrown in 2.5 seconds or less, which was the third-highest rate in football this weekend. With short routes and a well-devised game plan, he had a field day against the Saints, going 28-of-39 for 371 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Combine that with a solid performance from the running game, and it's no wonder Tennessee scored 34 points in the victory. 

sounds like this could potentially give our defense fits.  We thrive by pressuring and hitting the QB, and these short underneath and outside passes can give a D trouble as you all know from watching Luke McCown. What is our best strategy against this type of quick release offense?

Green Bay traditionally has killed people w/ the short game too.

Just means you can't sit back in zone all game thinking a pass rush will get there.   Means you have to come up to the line pressure the WRs.  Give the DL a chance.  Pending on what a team does on offense sometimes you almost have to go about things in reverse IMO.

also means we can't afford a bad day of tackling.  That type offense often lives or dies with that.

 

 

but the Saints are either the worst or 2nd worst D in the entire NFL.  So you can't judge anything of what teams do to someone that bad.

It helps when you have the quickest trio of linebackers in the league (TD, Luke, and Shaq). The D will do what it normally does - allow the short stuff underneath but tackle immediately. 

If you recall, Luke was out against the Taints, which is a huge reason why the pass D struggled. He is simply the best at quickly diagnosing plays.

This is actually a good stat to look into. Dinking and dunking is actually the way to beat us. McCown threw all over the place against us earlier this year. We've been able to get pressure on QB's this year, but this is about containment because of Mariottas quickness and mobility. Hopefully Shaq can be ready to play this week. He and TD are going to be instrumental in containing the short routes. Luke is literally the QB of the defense and he reads what every QB is doing. 

I expect Marcus to get yardage and a good completion percentage.... but the defense will keep him in front of him.

Looks like really most of his throws are just predetermined first option throws.  doesn't seem like he is making any reads usually.

This will be a big week for Shaq. The Titans play a lot of 12 and 21 personnel. He figures to be on the field for about 60% of the snaps.

Their new head coach was their TE coach 2 weeks ago. In his first game as head coach last week, guess who had big days vs. the Taints?

Expect more of the same, especially if Kendall Wright can't play again this week. DGB has a very limited route tree from what I hear on their boards, since he missed so much football before he was drafted and apparently isn't the sharpest spoon in the drawer.

Could be a challenge in terms of game film if the new coach is changing schemes!  Also, it's not like Mariota has played tons of games.  I forget how many games he was out. (too lazy to look it up)

Mariota's super quick release and just overall comfort in the pocket is what has impressed me most about the kid.  He really does have the cool, calm demeanor of a 5 year vet.  I've yet to see him get rattled.  His two biggest flaws at this point are his deep accuracy and he has trouble holding onto the football.  Our OL is NOT good though and is likely going to get wrecked by your front 7.  If that happens you can expect Marcus to turn it over a couple of times.

I doubt Wright will go.  Justin Hunter is just a guy and maybe the least physical receiver I've ever seen in my life.  He's only going to make plays if he's wide open.  And even then he might just drop it anyway.  You are right about DGB.  He's apparently having trouble with the playbook but he seems to be coming along, albeit slowly.   That said, at 6'5 235 he's a major redzone threat and a matchup nightmare for opposing DBs in jump ball situations.

Mariota is good, but all rookies make mistakes. And what better defense to pressure him into some Sunday. It will be a tough game.
