Gettleman gaming the Comp Pick situation / Tillman's injury?

pretty sure earlier this year Gman said that he wasn't expecting any comp picks, and even if he wanted them, I don't think he would purposely sit Tillman to get them, especially with how shaky Colin Jones looked filling in for him. Probably just wanted to avoid rushing Peanut back and then losing him for the playoffs.

Contrary to what some believe on here, I do think some people actually have a pretty good idea of how the picks work.  While the league doesn't release the exact formula, a little reverse engineeing can give you a pretty good idea of how it works.

Also some teams have consistently shown an ability to acquire extra pics and I would seriosely doubt it is because the league is playing favorites.  They have a good idea of how the system works and the approach free agency accordingly.

In the case of Tillman I would be surprised if we were playing the "compensatory pick game" in the middle of an undefeated season while trying to keep home field advantage throughout the playoffs.  If we were 1-7 when Tillman was hurt that might be another story.

Fug them all-pro fuggers they are not the only ones with sensible football knowledge lol.  Just kidding just kidding but seriously aside from Panthers United and his grocery list, a select few that would be "all-pro" but are to frugal to spend the money.

Anyways, I really dont think that the team would benefit as much as you would think sitting a guy like tillman.  At this moment they are thinking about the months after december and not so much comp picks.  Gettleman and you KB Fan( the statistician) are probably the only couple in the entire Carolina Franchise and Fan base that probably even recognized this situation but credit to you.  I would say it would be plausible but not a purposeful choice, if that makes any sense?  And like you said with bene going down Tillman is needed so it will end up being irrelevant.  But dang man, great catch.

The way to win the comp pick game is pretty simple in concept.  No favoritism needed.  Have a system in place that makes players play better in your system than for other teams.  What the Ravens do is making players look good in their system, then let them chase big money to other teams and bring in other guys that didn't do so well on other teams but make them fit them.  Kinda like Gettleman has done with Coleman, Ginn, Mitchell, etc.  The basic idea behind the comp pick game is to lose more FA value than you gain.  Exactly how that FA value is calculated is the mystery, but when you let Mike Mitchell go to Pittsburgh for $5mil a year and bring in Kurt Coleman for $1mil a year (or whatever he got around that), then you're losing more FA value than you're gaining.  Pretty simple math.

there are certainly some ways to game acquisitions/losses to get some extra picks, and obviously the Panthers are in a situation where they can rest some starters for the playoffs.

That said, I highly doubt Gettleman is going to put Colin Jones on the field just to get an extra pick next year. Right now they're all in on 2015. Flags fly forever.
