Is there something wrong with our Field Goal unit?

Why is it that Ben Jacobs needs to awkwardly block 2 players on each field goal?  I haven't been paying too close attention to other teams' field goal units, but there's no way they look as awkward as ours does.  Here are some examples of Jacobs having to pull off some strange assignments:

The blocked field goal cost us some serious momentum in the Giants game.  Is there a reason why our field goal unit needs to execute the way that they do?

We have improved this year over last in all areas of special teams, save field goal kicking.  Even our kick return allowed average is better than last year, although its still not good. I do get a little nervous now every time we kick.  While the field goal unit hasn't cost us a game yet, i fear that it will at the worst time (playoffs).

Time to find some hot shot ST coach rather than using retreads. I find it hard to believe that it has been a personnel issue for this long when we have practically replaced the entire units in the past few years. ST is an effort, desire and coaching unit. You don't need great talent to excel at it and we suck it. It's sad how much we have improved this year and that we still suck at it.

It's clear we don't put much effort into STST.  Our guyguy's hardly block PRs either. ck o

from what i saw... it's 11 vs 9 when it comes to FG\Punt blocking.. MOST TEAMS send all 11(maybe 10) to block the kick... but when we send out our unit.. we ALWAYS have 2-4 players playing the fake or standing up (not rushing).. meaning we only send 7-9 against thier 9 .... hence why we never get blocks... and more importantly why we cant protect against the block (as i assume they practice against the same 7-9 rushers)

Face it, our special teams have been bad for like a decade.  We need to put some focus on it.

The last few years they've added a ton of new players to STs...   Have to think the focus has to go on the coach(es)...

Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
