Seattle Times: What Happens to Athletes Bodies in the cold.

Its going to be very interesting to see how Seattle handles the weather.  I mean, that's a hard cold to me...like, fug it, I'm going to sit inside, drink hot chocolate by my fireplace under blankets!  I don't care why I need to go outside!

On the flip side, these are professional athletes and big time organizations who should be more than prepared for this kind of stuff.  I mean, they have research departments as well, right?  So they should be able to play pretty well there.  It's not like there hasn't been a cold game in the NFL ever...

gee I hope our weather here is nice and comfy or we may have a half full stadium if you are any indication

???  So my personal opinion on the temperature in Minnesota (in a game we aren't playing) makes me a "bad" fan?  Cool, thanks for that.

I did not purchase tickets.  I have ZERO access to tickets.  If I did, I would gladly go see my team play.  But then again, I'm sure you don't care about that.  I could tell you how I went to every home game, rain or shine, boiling hot and freezing cold for about three straight years, but again, this is the internet and it doesn't matter.

Since you're going, have a great time and cheer extra loud for all the fans who can't make it for whatever reason.

Your point is that I don't like the cold?  I appologize to the rest of the huddle for not contritubing to a dicussion of the topic and instead getting an an online pissing match.  I'll end it.  Welcome to my ignore list, have a great time pantherjack77.

Good graphic, but something I wonder: are these effects based on the normal human being and they're applying it to football or I wonder if they take into account the fact that a professional athlete's body functions at a different level physiologically than ours. Not to say the won't feet effects of extended time in the extreme cold just curious how a world class athlete's body reacts and if they took that into account.

Physiologically, their bodies react the same as ours. Granted, they are more efficient and can handle stress levels much better due to their superior conditioning.  But the science behind it applies equally. Besides, it's all a wash anyway since they are playing other athletes. So, it all equals out. SN: the graphic is titled "Athlete's body" and depicts a football player, soooo . . .

Golic was talking about cold weather apparel (or the lack of it) on Mike and Mike the other day. He said linemen who didn't wear sleeves in the cold were expressing their toughness. I always thought it was stupid and counter productive. As far as athletes being better prepared for the cold than us common folk, it may be true to a degree (pun intended), but OTOH fat is a better insulator than muscle, and I'm not referring to some of the big bellies on linemen. If your body's working overtime to keep your temp up due to bare skins exposed to below freezing temps, it's going to eventually have a negative effect during a game.

That was the game before they came here, right? Ugh..  Hope the cold affects Seattle the following week more than it did them haha

To be fair, the refs and Carolina themselves had as much or more to do with that loss as San Fran did.

If Cam had all the weapons he did at that time, Cam would've won a few Super Bowls by now.

Sidebar; (Homer glasses off) Let's not act like Cam from now is the same as Cam from first 2 seasons, although stats won't show that. He is a polished product now.

I was always taught that body heat loss through the head was much higher than 10%. Growing up I remember being told it was like 70% and that's why you needed to wear a hat.

That is one of those myths that somehow survive for generations.
