A lot of little clues are hinting at Sam Mills III pounding the drum Sunday. My question to the younger fans...

It means a lot to me as a fan and as someone that has (albeit small) ties to the Mills family.  Age wise, I am a a younger fan (31) but I still have not missed a moment since the teams '93 inception.

I know Sam spent most of his career with New Orleans, but if you asked him he'd consider himself a lifelong Panther.  The family ties come through his 2 sons Sam III, and Marcus (mainly Marcus) who I got to know going to the same school here in Charlotte with.  They too share the same sentiment about their late father's legacy as a true Panther and also find it an honor when his name is mentioned with the Panthers' organization.  It is a shame that more fans didn't have a chance to see Sam play in the few years he was with Carolina.

Do you have a sense of the importance of Sam Mills and Keep Pounding to this organization? What comes to mind when you hear the name Sam Mills? Please be honest.

I agree with SMIII pounding the drum, but here's why I ask: When Ricky Proehl ripped off his jacket last week to reveal the Sam Mills jersey, the reaction was a little more muted than I was expecting. It was SUCH a cool moment and there were a lot of cheers, but a lot of the younger faces were like...huh?

I hope people roar on Sunday if Mills III is indeed the one that pounds the drum.

To be honest, it was just a jersey.  Trust me, I get where it comes from and I understand what it represents, but I think you're looking too far into it.  I don't think the crowd is going to go wild because Ricky was wearing a jersey; this isn't the WWE :)

You see his jersey everywhere and the drum is sort of there to represent Sam Mills.  Wearing his jersey was a nice touch, but it shouldn't garner the reaction you were looking for.  Now, having his sons or some other significant person with a "Keep Pounding" story will.

After reading this.  It is VERY clear that you do NOT understand it.

Underrated post and good answer to the OP's original question.

Regarless of age or what era you grew up. (in the 80's for me) If you are truely interested in something you get to know about it. Even if it was before your time.

I know many of the young fans have heard the story of Mills...but many don't really understand the magnitude of what he and that speech meant to this organization.

He's new here, don't blame him.

Guys, I'm 27 years old, I grew up in Greensboro, I was old enough at the time to understand what it means today and I've never loved another team.  I think you misunderstood what I was trying to say.

The OP said he was disappointed that the crowd didn't cheer louder when Ricky revealed the jersey.  I don't think that happened because younger people don't understand what Mills meant to the organization.  We honor him every Sunday, when we put on our jerseys and when we pound the drum.  I was just trying to prove the point that it didn't necessarily mean anything because the crowd didn't erupt.

This is another "how long have you REALLY been a fan" thread in disguise. I'm fine with them doing Mills again but I think it should be someone different and either on the active roster or from the 2003 roster. Really not a big deal though.

It really is not. This is 100% because of the somewhat muted response to Proehl unveiling the Mills jersey last week.

    • Personally I think he's a nightmare to cover I think linebackers generally aren't fast enough to keep up with him in coverage and cornerbacks don't have the strength to tackle him one-on-one in physically bring them down which would normally lead to a broken tackle or a nasty stiff arm or just bully ball play sure you could find a receiver with comparable speed like Cooper but he's faster than Cooper sure you can find a wide receiver that is the same size but he's probably More powerful than them and a better blocker.  The size speed athleticism package that he is in is completely unique it's easier to say I'd rather have just a big blocker because we've never seen this type of profile before I'm a risk taker I think you would be God blessed if this was there at 19 I think if you can get a guy that's a tight end who immediately becomes the fastest guy on your offense and at the same time that third wide receiver that can stretch and burn defenses over the top that's the perfect what the Panthers need type weapon.
    • I think you're under selling Sadiq. They are two different players in terms of how they win. Loveland is 2 inches taller maybe 5-6 pounds heavier. Comparing his speed to sadiq.. well your comparing a 4.7 guy to a 4.3 guy I'm seeing a guy that can take a bubble screen from the tight end position and turn it into a house call. I'm not saying the guy is a certified home run pick but I don't think there's really a president's for a comparison for this kind of athlete. It's easy to say this doesn't look like Warren or Loveland because we haven't seen guys that fit this profile The closest you might be able to get is Vernon Davis.  He's not as sure far as those guys were but at 19 I think almost everybody is going to have some warts and he's a lottery ticket of could be top 10 in the draft player or could fail I am more of a risk taker I think he fits the athletic profile that could be a homerun, like I said he's almost 40 lb bigger than Cooper and like 4-5 in taller than Cooper so and he's faster. So whatever you think Cooper gives you I think he does that and more. If you want to go with one of the office alignment I can understand that as well but for value as a receiving threat I don't think there's a bigger value at number 19.
    • I’ve haven’t seen anything that says we have interest in Njoku?
