Fallout from Norman vs Beckham

Goodell wants two personal fouls to equal ejection

Quote

Turning it into a yellow card/red card situation would create a deterrent, or at least keep things from spiraling out of control such happened several times this year,

Specifically, the Panthers-Giants game in which Odell Beckham was flagged for spearing Panthers cornerback Josh Norman in the head would lead to him being thrown out under such a rule.

The measure will have to go through the competition committee, but should be the kind of thing that has plenty of traction.

I think three would be better myself.

2 personal fouls the way Beckham did them warrants an ejection (I know he had 3), but there are personal foul calls that are bullsh*t so 2 does seem a little low and could get undeserving players kicked out which would be a nightmare situation for a playoff game or other big game. 3 would be good but I don't think 3 personal fouls in a game has happened a lot so I doubt it even has much of an impact.

Eh, depends, and I don't know that this is the right solution...

Ejection is kind of a "know it when you see it" thing and the Beckham situation definitely was and they screwed it up...

Valid, but begs the question how you couldn't "know it" when you see a guy run ten yards to spear another guy helmet to helmet.

Guys screwing up is generally what gets things codified even when they shouldn't have to be.

I mean, you get a PF for a facemask, and sometimes it's obviously not blatant, and just a hand getting caught.  Especially linemen who are just grabbing whatever they can to get a stop, and don't even realize it.  The refs just need to be smart enough to know when to warrant an ejection.  In Beckham's case... the spear should have been it.

I was sorry they did away with the 5 yard / 15 yard facemask thing.

True... so instead of training the refs better, they're going to institute a stupid type of "zero tolerance policy" in effect...  not all personal fouls are equal.  Are facemask penalties going to count in this?

See above.

i think restoring the 5 vs 15 yard distinction on facemask penalties would help.

And while we're at it (cough) full time refs (cough).

If they did this, they would need to re-define what a personal foul is. Taunting, inadvertent late hits, inadvertent face masks, these things shouldn't be grounds for ejection. You want to limit intentional, malicious hits and plays, so only those types of plays should be "personal fouls".

Exactly why this is a bad idea.

    • He's a hard player to rank, cause he is a young NT. I do see his abilities to branch out among the DL. That's the only way for him to land in the 1st, some team has to believe he's got the stuff to play DE or T3.... I just don't see using 19 on him, I feel there should be around 7 players just ranked higher than him for the Panthers team.  ___________________________________________________________________   Now you are a roster nut like me. Im tossing this into fire, I think a good move is to trade UP, yes rare. Just the roster #s tell me 5 rookies and no more than 2 starters will make the team. I feel 5 is magic number.    QB- 2  BY, Pickett RB- 3   Chubba, Brooks(pls), etienne TE- 4   Sanders, Temble, Evans, Draft pick/major/franks/UDFA OL- 10   Walker, Lewis, Fortner, Hunt, Motown, Zavailla, Samac, Stone, Draft pick, Draft pick/Charles/carter WR-  6   Tmac, XL, Coker, Metch, Horn, Tremay   offense=  25 with 3 draft picks   DL-  6   Brown, Brown, Wharton, Ray, Cam, Hunter/draft pick Ed-   5  Phillips, Nic, Prince, Jones, ST/incoom/hampton ILB-   5  Lloyd, Wallace, Bam, Claud, draft pick CB-    5 Horn, Jackson, Thor, Evans, draft pick/CSN/UDFA SS-  4  Scott, More, Ramsom, Sim   Defense = 25 with 3 picks   ST = known 3+o+d = 53 roster   SO I see only room for 5-6 with factoring in UDFA pool. That tells me to trade up! Bonus the 1st+3rd gets in front of TB yucs. Then use one of the 5ths+2nd to draft another target. That's your two starters and use the 4th, 5th and 6th for the development OTs and what ever the best player are at the pick/DB. The last couple years they have added 2-3 UDFA each year, maybe the same this year too. Soooooooo Im normally 95% trade back, but above made me change my mind. I do not want to waive 5th rounder, I feel thats high with players on the bench.    ??
