Panthers interviewing special teams coaches

According to Alex Marvez of FOX Sports, the Panthers are interviewing Bucs assistant Kevin O’Dea and 49ers assistant Thomas McGaughey for a special teams coaching position with the team.

It’s unclear if that’s a reflection on DeHaven’s condition, as neither he nor the team has said much about it. Last week, he buried the hatchet with Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who fired him as Buffalo’s special teams coach following the Music City Miracle in the 1999 playoffs.

The Panthers brought 67-year-old Russ Purnell in as an assistant to DeHaven this year, so this could be for a role supplementing DeHaven.

My take: DeHaven could be retiring.

Just heard they are also interested in bringing in Chase Blackburn to interview for the Asst Special Teams spot.

The fact that they are only interviewing assistants though might mean that's all they're really looking for.

Bobby April is a long time special teams coach in the NFL who's currently unemployed. If they're not interviewing a guy like that, it might not be for the top spot.

It should be.  We're terrible.  Whomever kept Teddy Williams on the field after he notched a penalty a game should be fired.

Interview some ST players while you're at it.  Some that may tackle a guy who didn't call a fair catch perhaps?

I think this is more about how much time coach DeHaven has on this earth, not about upgrading... 

Russ Purnell was brought out of retirement to help this year, but it sounds like he'd like to go back to being retired. 

I don't think we're replacing coach DeHaven (unless we have to) I think we're looking for another assistant/backup.

I actually blame that on coaching. Ditto Teddy Williams penalties.

Looking for assistants to assist with the horrendous ST's we have every year. They need to shake things up. Hope De Haven retires, recovers, and has a long and healthy life with his family.

Let's not forget that Teddy Williams was also responsible for the play Philly Brown was able to make a few years ago on a punt return against the Bears...

Yeah, sorry, one good play does not negate 20 penalties in a season.

Fair, but Teddy Williams was also response for the bone-headed play that allowed Philly to return a punt against the Bears a few years ago - so there's a history that extends beyond our coaching.

It's worth remembering that DeHaven didn't really plan to be a special teams coach again. He was working as an assistant here with an eye toward retirement when the need came open.
